     This quote by first lady Rosalynn Carter is relevant to anyone in the business of sales, but especially to those of us in the real estate & mortgage fields.

 

     Through my years of working in sales and training others in sales, I've found that a fear of failure or fear of rejection is one of the biggest impediments to success.  People don't act because they fear failure, and remain stagnant and unproductive.  The comfort of never starting often outweighs the potential of failing or facing rejection along the way.  This MUST be overcome to be a successful sales person.  Once you get past the fear of failure, your goals will become greater, and you'll reach levels you didn't know were possible.

 

Here are a few things to keep in mind to help you get over the fear of rejection or failure:

 

- True overnight successes are one in several million.  Instant success is luck & timing coming together, pure & simple.  The vast majority of "overnight success" stories you see & hear are the result of years of struggle, hard work, and failure. EVERYONE has experienced failure.  The success stories are the ones that kept going.

 

- Sales & marketing is largely a numbers game.  To reach success, you will HAVE TO fail many, many times.  You will be rejected over & over again before meeting success.  If you make 100 sales calls, 10 of them may be successful.  Whether the first 10 or last 10, the 90 rejections in the middle don't mean anything!  To be super successful you should aim to turn that 10 into a 13-15.  Even the most successful sales people strike out far more often than they hit home runs.

 

- Rejection/failure should be stored in your short term memory.  Each failure is an opportunity to learn & improve.  Learn your lesson, implement any necessary changes, and move on to your next sale.

 

- Since sales is largely a numbers game, every single failure or rejection gets you one step closer to success.
