Occasional Book Reviw - "The Light Between Oceans" ... Ocean City, New Jersey

Each September our Ocean City Yacht Club "Book Club" selects the next five books for the following yacht club year which runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day ... although we do have Tuesday night dinners from early May through mid October.  So when my wife and I laid the plans for the book club, we decided to have one per month from May through September ... and did not include October because we required a bit more time to read one more book.

Regardless, the first book of the 2014 calendar will be "The Light Between Oceans" (2012) by M. L. Stedman.  I started it a few nights ago and have read about a third of the book.  It is set in western Australia about 100 miles out in the ocean on a small island with a lighthouse.  Tom is the new man handling the job at the lighthouse with no one else on the island and only four visits by boat per year.  He later means Isabel, and they fall in love and get married.  She now lives on the island as well.  And the story begins.

The lighthouse setting just after World War I is dramatic as is their relationship.  What moves the story along is a fateful decision made when a dead man in a row boat is washed on to the island ... and a little baby is still alive.  Isabel talks Tom into keeping the baby as their own.  And so the story begins.

M. L. Stedman writes her first novel set in her home country.  It is a powerful story that leads the ready to recosider decisions made, reflect on what might be right or wrong, and why said actions were so decided.  A powerful story which will create great discussion at our book club, I am carefully reading the book and taking appropriate notes.  I highly recommend this to you.
