Chrome trap fittings ain't what they used to be.  I have seen fifty-year-old fittings still going strong and fittings less than two years old with holes in them.drains

The problem is that the gauge (and possibly the quality of the brass as well) of the newer fittings is so thin that they corrode through (from the inside) very quickly. Note the corrosion on these newer fittings.drainsdrains

I have found that most people are willing to change the trap components inside cabinets under the sink to plastic, but are usually resistant to change the ones on pedestal sinks to plastic because of the "look."  Well, good news, they are now making these more durable plastic drain components with a shiny chrome finish.  As seen in this next picture.drains

I routinely photo the bottoms of these fittings, as the picture provides me with a great deal of info in a single shot----condition and type of sink, connections, etc.  One time I got a picture of a sponge that had been placed to collect a very small leak that I wouldn't have noticed otherwise.  Not a big deal---but interesting.  Note also that there is already a little corrosion starting on the bottom of this trap.drains

As a guy who is also a remodeling contractor the first thing I noticed is the repaired drywall in the second pic from the bottom. That needs to be done correctly. I never have been a home inspector but I do see a lot of things done in a very non-workmanlike manner.

Kevin, I agree, but if there is an area of the wall of a bathroom that is done slopily---that will be it:)

Nice post. I use plastic as I find it easier to work on., But then again I am not a pro

Hi Charlie,  Do you have some brands that you can recommend?

HHHmmm, that is one way to look up at the bottom of the sink without breaking your neck. Kinda reminds me of the "up Skirt" pictures that guys try to take.

Charlie, most of the "pros" like the plastic too.

Leslie, although I have a nice picture of one---I'll be damned if I can find a manufacturer.  I will get back to you on that:)

Sean, I wont'go there:)

Hi Charles. It seems everything is made so cheaply these day. I have grown tired of buying the cheap junk, but sometimes you spend the extra money for the better item, and it is still _ _ it! I have made it a point to save every receipt and return it after the item fails, and if I get any crap from the cashier, I simply tell them I cannot afford to buy junk and replace it with junk again in a year and a half. I have had some arguments, but I usually win and get satisfaction. Let the manufacturer, or the retailer take the loss. I will no longer take the loss! - Ray

Charles, Chrome drains look great, but they do rust through too easily. I like Ray's idea, and will keep the receipt in the drawer and return them when they rust through.

Charles, you home inspectors have the most amazing photos in your posts!  The one at the bottom must have been interesting to take!

Michael, don't you just hate taking things back?

Patricia, my camera has a little lazer light that allows me to just point and shoot without actually looking at the screen or though the view window.  Otherwise I would have to be a contortionist.heat
