Always the fourth Sunday in March, open house for Maine's Maple Syrup Producers is a rite of Spring in the Pine Tree State.

As a kid, my Dad owned an 80 acre woodlot in Ludlow and we tramped up to hang the buckets on the spout taps on a variety of maple trees.  The woodlot was in the family primarily for a wood burning source of heat since the 1920's. Also had large maples on the farm driveways too that we tapped each late winter / early spring.  A lot of work to boil down the sap for the finished product but well worth it.  I think the ratio was 40 to 1 for raw product to finished product. Amber light, extra dark amber...and everything in between. Sounds like a micro beer brewery talk but we mean golden Maine maple syrup.  Always talked about adding a network of plastic piping to gravity feed the sap at the family woodlot to avoid the bucket brigade.  Having a pan cake supper and public tour of the facility was always a dream of my Dad. The piping network would allow the sap to run directly to the evaporator house and save the lugging of collector buckets thru the winter snows.  Vermont is a state that comes to mind when you think maple syrup.  But Maine has an network worth reading about. Plan to come to Maine the fourth Sunday of March to take part in an open house maple syrup operation.  In the meantime visit the Maine state maple syrup website page on the subject! Another site to see 179 Maine maple syrup recipes at and to learn more on this type of farming found at the Maine Maple Producers site!  How Maine maple syrup is made and the history of this age old early spring ritual is all in there! In the Smyrna Maine area, the Brannen's run a first class operation on US Rt 2 that is worth visiting during their open house. This operation also includes Maine made honey and maple baked beans and use of Houlton Farms Dairy ice cream.  Getting hungry?

Sounds like micro beer brewery talk but I would recommend getting hold of Kristi Brannen that is a link on this blog...she and her husband are super and can help you! They have bee honey too!

Andrew, this is a charming post, and a good one to read hungry!  I may need pancakes for dinner!  And I'm sure Whole Foods carries Maine maple syrup.  I'm certainly going to check the next time I head over there.

Take lots of money or a chunk of gold. The real stuff..not the 2% with filler of sugar is pricey and quite the alixir. Son Alex just flew in from GW in your neck of the woods...week of vacation. He was talking about cherry blossoms and way way less snow there.  Has done about 65% of the exhibits so far!  Thanks for bouncing in!

Very nice post that gives a unique local flavor to your area. I checked out the Brannen's website as I use honey rather than sugar to sweeten hot tea. I thought the prices for the syrup and tea were quite reasonable, though I didn't look into the shipping charges. I will definitely be checking them out next time I need/want "real" maple syrup.

BTW, this and so many of your posts are such great pieces on localism, you may want to post them to the Localism Group to get more google juice and exposure! Just a thought.

LOL...and <<<smile>>> Yes I certainly do! Not quite the Sugar Smacks of today but then again we weren't so hyper either! We actually went outside to play; novel idea huh!?! The natural way to get some of that pent up energy out...OK, off the soapbox <<<smile>>>

Had an older fellow come in and say ADHD this ADHD that..he said every kid is diagnosed with those four little letters.  He said there are legitimate kids with it, but not as many as get broad brushed so easy with the condition.  He said when he was a little kid, they had four letters too to describe the hyper, in and out of trouble and no disciplined nature...it was B R A T! He said the woodshed cured that and the "wait til your father gets home".
