There's a small community called PUAKO on the Kohala Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii that is just down the road from the Mauna Kea Resort.
Caption: This is a portion of the Puako shoreline, a little rugged, where an ancient lava flow went into the ocean. Homes are spectacular with fabulous views of the ocean.
Yesterday, I drove through this small oceanfront community, past the Hoku Loa church (founded in 1856)
and to the General Store. There I looked on its bulletin board to see which contractors and other services were advertising themselves to this community. You see, rather than calling suppliers etc. from Kailua-Kona about 35 miles away, I try to use local talent for certain jobs. And the bulletin board did not disappoint!
And where do Puakoans go for dining, entertainment, and fun shopping in their neighborhood? The closest is the Shops at Maunalani just to the south in the Mauna Lani Resort. Here you will find Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, Tommy Bahama Restaurant, plus a variety of retail shops.
Puako is a little pocket of mostly oceanfront homes, some of them vacation rental, but many of them just owners who like to get away from everyone. In fact, just down the street I marketed some property at Nani Paniau going back all the way to 1995, and now some of the most expensive real estate on the Big Island.
Puako is rich in Hawaii's heritage, it has the largest petroglyph field in the Pacific in its 233-acre Puako Petroglyph Archaeological District with over 3000 carvings. They include paddlers, sails, marchers, dancers, and family groups, plus dogs, chickens and deity symbols. To find out how to get to this field, click here.
