Too Much Zip in Addison, Texas?
When it comes to zip codes, Addison has too many (and that's my opinion). The west side of Addison is in the 75001 zip code and the east side is 75254. It wouldn't be so much of a problem, but most of 75254 is within the city of Dallas. And the mailing addresses for everyone in that zip code? Dallas.
It gets confusing. You can live in Addison and have a Dallas mailing address. You can own a business in Addison and have a Dallas mailing address. Business owners who really are in Dallas say they're in Addison for the panache.
Once every ten years, Addison has the opportunity to try to change this zip code dilemma. And that ten year period is upon us.
The justification packet to determine feasibility was submitted a few months ago to the Postmaster and there is supposed to be a 60 day response time. We're beyond that. We have an "acting" Postmaster holding things up.
The next step in the process, after getting the Postmaster's approval, is to set a date for the "survey" to be done. This entails a vote by homeowners AND business owners who live and/or own businesses in the portion of the city that would be affected by the change.
If the survey is not approved, it will be another ten years before Addison can try this again.
Council members and the City Manager have been meeting with members of the Addison Quorum Business group to discuss the proposed zip code change, to present the rationale for the proposed change, to answer any questions, and to obtain their support. It will probably be easier to gain support among the homeowners than the business owners as the latter will have to change letterhead, business cards, etc. if the proposed change is approved.
