During a recent visit to Oahu we took a one day tour to the “Big Island” of Hawaii with Robert’s Hawaii Tour. We flew into Kona where we were delighted with the small but very tropical open airport where we were met by the bus for a comprehensive tour of the island. Our first stop was Waikoloa, a beach resort on the Kohala coast with a very tropical atmosphere of beauty. Our first impression of the drive around this island was of the black lava covering much of the land. We then proceeded to drive to Hilo and on to Rainbow Falls (we didn’t see any rainbows) then continued to Kilauea Volcano which is still active, continually producing lava. The view into the volcano isn’t dramatic but is interesting. We then traveled to the Thurston Lava Tube which is a tunnel created by lava flowing underground. Next stop was the Punaluu Black Sand Beach which gave us the opportunity to observe the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles sunning on the sand. Our long tour took us back to Kona after passing by many of the cattle ranches which are abundant on Hawaii. We were unaware that this island is so well known for its beef. It’s also known for it’s coffee which we were able to sample and enjoy. Enjoy the photos!
