Los Angeles 411: Travel Town Museum, Los Angeles
Choo! Choo! Coming Through! A train enthusiast's dream come true, the Travel Town Museum is an outdoor museum that captures the railway heritage of the western United States. Developed in the 1950s, Travel Town Museum showcases an incredible collection. The museum artifacts tell the story of how the railroads aided the development in Southern California. From locomotives, to freight cars and cabooses, and passenger cars and interurbans, the museum provides a wide selection of artifacts to learn about history and to enjoy for FREE!
A part of the American Southwestern Railway Association working in tandem with the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, The Travel Town Museum Foundation strives to fulfill its mission by supporting the restoration, operation, and interpretation of the historic railroad equipment at the City-operated Travel Town Museum in Griffith Park. Travel Town, including its gift shop is open daily, except Christmas, from 10am-4pm Monday through Friday and from 10am-5pm Saturday and Sunday. Travel Town is located at 5200 Zoo Drive, Los Angeles. Just 12 miles north of Downtown in beautiful Griffith Park, we're next to the 134 Freeway at the Forest Lawn Drive exit.
When visiting Travel Town, you can even take a ride on two available railroads: one is a railroad built around the perimeter of the museum called the Travel Town Railroad; the other is the Griffith Park Southern Railroad (GPS). At Griffith Park and Southern Railroad you travel over one mile of track, across a bridge, through a forest and the Old Western Town. Though train operations began in Griffith Park as early as the 1940s, the current miniature train ride was built in the 1960s along with the passenger loading area, the train barn, the tunnel and bridge. The trains that run at GPS are one-third scale reproductions of classic American trains of he 20th century.
Miniature train rides are open daily at 10 am and open until 3:15pm during the winter; tickets are incredibly reasonable at $2.75. For more information about miniature train rides, please call: (323) 662-9678. For general information, please telephone the Operations Office at (323) 662-5874.
