How to Save Money While Grocery ShoppingWhat can you do to save money when shopping for groceries?  Grocery shopping is something we have no choice in.  We've all gotta eat, right?  Most of us have food budgets and need help figuring out how to stretch our food dollars.

Here's a few little secrets for saving money on groceries:

  • Grocery Ads - Most grocery store ads come out on Wednesdays.  Watch for specials that will save you  money on the menus you've planned.  Likewise, you can plan your meals around what's on sale.
  • Make a List - Make sure everything you need for mealtime is on your list before you go to the grocery store.  Then, if it's not on the list, don't buy it.  Impulse purchases can kill a budget.
  • Fill Up Before You Go - Everything looks good when you're hungry.  So, make sure you've eaten before you go to the store.  It will make sticking to your grocery list a lot easier.
  • Shop Alone - It's a littler harder to say no to a spouse or children when they say, "Please, please, please".  So, leave the little tikes (big tikes, too) at home.
  • Eye Level Shopping - Grocery stores know how to line their shelves.  Higher cost products are placed at eye level.  But, don't forget to look at the lower shelves.  You'll find lower cost, better buy, products there.
  • Store Brands - Shoppers are getting more and more comfortable with buying store brands.  The quality tends to be just as good as the higher priced products without the higher cost.  You can easily save 25% to 35% on your grocery bill by using store brands in place of name brand foods.

It's really exciting to know you are getting the most out of your grocery budget.  What do you do to save money at the grocery store?  How much money do you save by implementing your money-saving strategy?

Pamela,

Thank you for sharing the information. I always seem to forget that higher prices are usually placed on eye level. Got to bend down and check on the lower shelves. It is good for the pocket book and a little exercise is always good for the body.

Pamela,

Great advice, thanks for sharing.  Make sense to have a plan before we hit the store, especially during the holiday season.

Hi Sarah and Lester - Think of it as saving money AND getting a little extra exercise. :)

Hi Richard - During the holidays and when you're hungry.  Heaven help us if we're doing both!

We also watch the ads and plan accordingly.  But, with the price of meat going sky high, we will be using it less and more as an accent than a main dish.

Hi Marshall - We're doing the same thing.  We take one boneless, skinless chicken breast and divide it in two for a meal.  Lots of veggies, though.  So, that's a good thing.
