On Veteran's Day, I think almost all of us search for words that are adequate to thank those military men and women (past and present) who so willingly sacrifice and serve. I've enjoyed reading some really eloquent tributes both here in the Rain and on Facebook. And couldn't quite figure out what to say to add to the expressions of gratitude.
So I am throwing out a challenge to all of you. Definitely continue expressing your gratitude to veterans on this Veteran's Day. But let's add in some actions to show our appreciation, too. Here are the ideas I came up with so far (and no these are not all original ideas but I like them):
Treat a service man or woman or retired vet to a meal or a coffee.
If you have a business, offer a discount or special to any current or past military members (this can extend all month long, don't you think?)
If you are a business owner, think of ways to reach out to a returning service member who may need a job. So many of those skills and character traits would make them an AWESOME employee!
For those of us in real estate, how about a special discount on our services for the month of November (whether that is a discount on our commission in helping a military member buy or sell a home; paying for an appraisal, a home inspection, a home warranty - whatever else would help).
Start an office collection point for holiday goodie bags or cards.
Don't forget the families of deployed soldiers, too. How about offering some lawn mowing, car maintenance, home maintenance, baby sitting, etc - many of those holding down the home "fort" are trying to juggle being both a father and a mother to the kids, while maintaining a household, a job, and keeping that upbeat support for their soldier.
This is just a drop in the bucket as far as a list, I know - but am just inviting you to think about ways that we can all reach out in both words and actions to really express our gratitude on this Veteran's Day. Are you with me?
And, to all you military men and women, past and present, a very heartfelt thank you!!
