My Review of BO-Beau La Mesa

Last week I wrote about the new Cohn restaurant in La Mesa, BO-Beau Kitchen and Garden and last night my husband and I set out to discover how well it lived-up to the reputation of the other Cohn Group restaurants.

I had made a reservation online for 7:00 p.m.  We arrived a few minutes early, but were immediately seated in the main dining room.  Our table was kind of small and back in a corner, but it was okay.  The décor was pleasant but the room was a bit loud with the tile floor and high ceilings.

Our server, Steve, came over right away and offered us water and the menus.  We decided to order a bottle of wine, and unfortunately I found the wine list annoying.  The offerings were broken down into categories of Cheap, Decent, Good, and Very Good, as I remember.  We are white wine drinkers and are particularly fond of Chardonnay, but there was no Chardonnay listed in the Good section…..which I find to be ridiculous as there are plenty of good medium priced Chardonnays.  So we selected a “good” Pinot Grigio.  This ranking of the wines into categories seems unnecessary to me as one can generally assume that if a wine is more expensive it is a better wine, otherwise why would you pay more?  And why would a restaurant want to serve a wine that is only Decent?  Could also be awkward when ordering on a date…hmm….I only rate a Decent wine?  Why not a Good or Very Good?

Our wine arrived promptly and it was very nice.  Steve brought us a bucket of ice to keep the bottle chilled while we ate, but when he placed it on the table it took up about a quarter of the table, leaving me with no space.  I asked if they had a stand to place next to the table, but they did not, so we placed the bucket on the floor…not exactly ideal.

But other than those two small complaints, everything else was great!  Wonderful food and very good service.  We shared the wild arugula salad that was very tasty with roasted beets and goat cheese.  My husband then had the Boeuf Bourguignon which was incredibly tender and full of flavor.  It was served along with the traditional baby carrots and potatoes and some delightfully crusty French bread for soaking up the stewing juices. I had the black cod which was served with caramelized cauliflower and haricots verts.  The fish was perfectly cooked and the light white wine sauce was just right and did not overpower the fish.  The timing for serving us our main courses after the salad was perfect and with no room for desert, we just sat and enjoyed the rest of our wine, and did not feel at all rushed.

After dinner we toured the rest of the facility.  The bar seemed cozy but not cramped, and the lighting is really nice.  The patio though is my favorite…we’re definitely eating out there next time.  The area is surrounded by trees and bushes and several different fire features.  It is very quiet compared to the indoor dining room, and really a lovely setting.

While outdoors we had a chance to meet one of the owners, Michelle Kveen who was very welcoming and anxious to make sure we had a good dining experience…which we certainly did.  I would definitely recommend BO-Beau Kitchen and Garden and look forward to trying the rest of the menu.   Maybe they’ll even add a “Good” Chardonnay ;)
