Start from a position of strength

I was at a “Save a Back” class this last week and the premise of the whole class was that you should always have your back in a position of strength.  They illustrated this by showing athletes and how they always start from a position of strength.  By starting in a position of strength the muscles are quicker to respond, the body has a greater range of motion, and injury is less likely to occur.  As I have pondered this I have been applying it to my whole life not just my physical.  So I have compiled a small list of ways that we as agents can “start from a position of strength.”

Always be prepared

I cannot tell you how many time I have put off preparation only to find myself running out of the door at the last minute to an appointment.  I get there just in time but frazzled and unprepared.  I usually do a good job at winging it, have always been blessed in that way, but inside I know that I could have done a better job.

How many times do you lift a box off of the floor and you have not problem but that one time you lift and POP.  You wish then that you would have been doing it right all along.  It is not different in you profession. When you meet with your client and you show up with papers shoved into a file and your shirt is a mess you have to ask yourself “What am I communicating.”  We have all heard about first impressions and how important they are but what about 20 minutes later when you are asked for information about a property and you have to dig for it …  Or how about leaving an open house and you do not lock up.

Always follow through on what you say.

“ I will call you tomorrow.”  “ I will email it to you”  “Meet me at 7:00”  If you say it do it.  Peoples time is valuable and when you waste their time it will cost you.

Be honest.

When I was 18y/o and in the US Navy, I was home on leave for a few days.  I want to extend it so I could do some things with my dad.  I called up my Commanding Officer to request and extension.  While on hold I ask my dad if I should tell that I am sick and cannot make it back.. His reply is one that I have carried with me my entire life and I continually strive to live up to.  It was this – “You will never have to regret telling the truth, it will get more results then being dishonest.”  We are all tempted to stretch the truth when it means closing the deal.  Do not do it.  Be a person of high morals and tell the truth.  People will respect you for it.

Take care of yourself.

Not going to say a lot here – you can extrapolate.

 Mind – Read more
 Body – Eat better and exercise
 Soul  - Meditate, Pray, Journal, or what ever works for you.

Starting from a position of strength will minimize injuries

If you have ever had a back injury you know that it can be very frustrating.  Prevention will go along way in keeping this from happening to you.  It is no different in you business.  Once you cause an injury by not adhering to the few ideas that I list you can pay for it for years.  This is only a few ideas but I am sure that you can add a few ideas yourself.  Maybe post some of your experiences where you, or others that you have had business with, have failed to “Start from a position of Strength.”

LOVE this reminder that a position of strength starts with honest integrity. When I began in real estate I thought I had to have all the answers and be the smartest man in the room. Now I know I have to be honest... and its OK to say .. I don't know I check back with you
