Ways to Save on Heating Your Home

All of us know it’s getting cooler outside. The “s” word has even been mentioned in some of the Bucks County weather forecasts lately, which means winter is right around the corner. Here are some tips on how to save a little money this fall and winter, while keeping your home warm and cozy at the same time.

Turn down your thermostat. If you turn down your thermostat 10 degrees before you leave for work, turn it up when you get home, and turn it down that same 10 degrees before you go to bed, you will save approximately 14% on your heating bill.

Close doors and vents. If you have a room that is seldom used, be sure the door is closed, as well as the heating vents to that room.

Windows and curtains. Open windows during the day to allow solar heating, and close them at night. Closing the curtains at night will trap the heat inside, not allowing it to escape through cold windows.

Block leaks in your windows and doors. On a windy day, hold an incense stick in front of a closed window and doors. If you see the smoke coming towards you, you have a draft. You can use caulk to block out those drafts around window frames, and door sweeps to close spaces under exterior doors.
