Honolulu-Hawaii Pet Quarantine: Prepare For Your Hawaii Move!

If you have plans to Relocate to Hawaii for a Hawaii Job Transfer, Hawaii Military PCS or just decided that Hawaii is your dream place to retire then of course you are planning ahead to make sure your beloved Poochie, Kitty or other pet will have the least amount of stress in their transition to Hawaii as well.

Hawaii is "RABIES FREE" so it is a guarantee that you will have to follow strict rules and guidelines as well as have plenty to do ahead of time to prepare your pet for travel and relocation too. The purpose of our Hawaii dog and cat import law is to protect our residents as well as pets from potential health problems associated with rabies.

The following Animal Quarantine's Hawaii Rabies Quarantine Brochure (click and save the pdf file for future use)will give you details on the process as well as an extensive overview and checklist to follow so your pet does not have to go through the stress of a full 120 day quarantine.

The "Five Day or Less Program" has 7 steps with multiple points under the checklist such as:

  • Rabies Vaccinations (not less than 90 days prior to arrival, nor less than 90 days apart, not more than 12 mos prior to arrival for one year rabies vaccination and 36 mos for 3 year)
  • Microchip  (Required before the OIE-FAVN Rabies Blood Test)
  • OIE-FAVN Rabies Blood Test (not more than 36 mos. and not less than 120 days prior to arrival to Hawaii)
  • WAITING PERIOD- After the OIE-FAVN Rabies Blood test there is a 120 day waiting period and any animal arriving early will AUTOMATICALLY disqualify the animal for the 5-day or less quarantine or airport release!
  • Documents: Vaccination certificates, original health certificate (in English), treated for ticks by vet and so forth.
  • Document submission:  All documents and payment submitted to the Animal Quarantine Station, 99-951 Halawa Valley Street; Aiea, HI  96701 (NO Faxes accepted!)
  • Other: Verification of pet's qualification

The cost is $165 per pet for direct airport release or $224 per pet for the 5-day-or-less program. The 120 day program costs $1,080.

Other things to take note of are your pets medication (plastic bottles only). Heartworm disease is a great concern and your should test your dog prior to entering Hawaii and administer heartworm medication before arriving as well as while residing in Hawaii.

Again, the 24 page brochure Animal Quarantine's Hawaii Rabies Quarantine Brochure is in pdf format and you can save it to your pc for future reference. Be prepared and care for your family pet long before your Hawaii Relocation.

Good information, Sally!  This is something most people wouldn't think of... another detail associated with moving!

Sounds tough but folks have to follow the same for Internation travel.  Makes sense.

Good Morning Sally! I love the photos of your puppy and what great information for you consumer. I don't think we could every leave our golden "GiGi" so we may not be coming to Hawaii very soon. It's actually David that says he would never put her in a kennel. I'll have to find a friend that can baby sit. I want to visit Hawaii again...I am longing for it! See you soon....always great work you do!

Roscoe is a good boy and gets all of his shots every year or on a regular basis. Florida is filled with many germs for pets so it's the safest way to keep them from getting sick.

Hi Sally! I guess I will stay home with Chanel. I couldn't image being apart from her for a quarantine. I won't even take her to a kennel. This is what happens when you are addicted to your pet! lol

Sally, excellent info that many would not realize up front.  No one would want to go through a full quarantine.

Margaret: I too...don't go traveling because of my dog...kennels and so forth. It's possible to do everything and get approval and pick the pet up directly at the airport. Otherwise, they transport directly from the airport to quarantine.

Lenn: Yup....and the reason I don't go traveling...can't take pooch and she would not do good in a kennel.

Jeanean: Same with us.... we haven't been on a vacation for 3.5 years...but that's okay. We aren't the traveling kind of people....our idea of a vacation is just veging at home and getting appointments done (medical and such :)

03/16/2008 11:17 AM by Celeste "SALLY" Cheeseman (RA), Hawaii Real Estate & Hawaii Relocation (Century 21 Liberty Homes -Mililani, Hawaii)

Neal: Yeah...we do too...coming into Hawaii is another story...we have no rabies...we have no snakes....(illegal) and other stuff....so it's important to have everything in place when people relocate here with pets.

That's us too Lizette!  No quarantine or kennels for our poochie!

Steve: Thanks....I know I don't go anywhere with our pooch either ....and I hope this will help many for their beloved pets that they want to bring....and have less stress.

That's wonderful that Hawaii is completely rabies free!  Very good information for families with pets.

Always important for folks relocating here to get this information ahead of time.  If they do not get their pets shots taking care of the quarantine if a giant hassle.

Wow, I couldn't leave Zoey in some strange place for 5 days...or even longer! Guess I won't be moving to Hawaii! There's got to be a better way...

03/17/2008 08:57 AM by Kelly Sibilsky - Lake Zurich, IL RE/MAX Real Estate Agent (RE/MAX Unlimited Northwest)

Jim/Maria: We don't have any snakes and other little critters either ...:)

Randy: No kidding...not to mention the stress the animal goes through for four months!

Kelly: Me either....and they do have pick up at the airport if EVERYTHING is in order and pet passed...

I can't imagine a world without animals needing rabies shots..................is it heaven??????

03/18/2008 07:54 PM by Barbara-Jo & Bill - - Florida Realty Professional - AHWD (Charles Rutenberg Realty)

Sally- Is Hawaii still snake free? That was one thing I did like when I went camping. In California when I was camping one time, there was a snake in my sleeping bag, that frieked me out.

Good information to have well in advance so that the owners can be prepared.  It is important to keep the pets safe.

Joan: You're sooo right! So many don't understand the importance...not only for the pet...but for our islands too!
