4 Things to Maintain Around the House You Don’t Always Think About

Pressure Washing and Sealing your Deck

This is something that doesn’t necessarily have to be done on a yearly basis.  You can typically go a couple of years before your deck needs to be pressure washed and sealed again.  There are several advantages to pressure washing your deck.  One big advantage is pressure washing takes off the moss, mold and algae, which can make your deck slippery and unsafe.  After pressure washing, it helps to seal it again.  This will not only help to preserve it, but your deck will look nicer as well.

HVAC Inspection

You should have your heating, ventilation and air conditioner checked yearly.  Having your heat stop working in the middle of winter or your air conditioner stop blowing cold air in the middle of the summer is not something you want to happen so it is better to have regular maintenance performed on your unit.  It is better to have your HVAC checked in the fall or spring time when the weather is more pleasant in case there is a problem and when the rates are cheaper because their services aren’t in great demand.

Termite Inspection

It is important to have a termite inspection performed annually.  It’s not often that you can actually see termites and the damage they could be causing.  Termites feed on wood floor joists, subfloor, wall studs and anything that is made from wood like the paper in books, furniture and drywall.  In the United States alone, termites cause over $5 billion in damages per year and the majority of homeowners insurance does not cover the repairs needed.

Clean Out the Dryer Vent

The dryer vent is not something that most homeowners think to clean that often, however, it could be costly to overlook it.  It is very common to have substantial lint build up in your dryer vent which would lead to the dryer overheating and could potentially start a fire.  This is especially true in homes where the dryer vent is not on an exterior wall.  While the dryer vent is not always on your mind to clean, you should still have it looked at or cleaned out every year.
