       Worthwhile Do-It-Yourself Website Optimization Tips

I get asked alot about search engine optimization.  My focus now is Search Advertising (paid search) but I do provide tips and techniques to my clients I feel are easy to accomplish and won't take more than 10 minutes to do...

OPTIMIZATION TIPS

The following website optimization tips are provided as a service of eSourceAgent.com.  Please visit www.esourceagent.com/demo to find out about us.

TIP # 1:  Submit your site to Google in 30 seconds...

Go to the first page on your site and copy the web address.  It will look like http://www.mywebsite.com.

Now open up the Google site submission page at www.Google.com/addurl/

Paste your address in the URL field and enter the "squiggly letter" security word that they show you.  That's it! You have successfully submitted your site to Google.  If you can access all the pages on your site from the home page through links then there is no need to submit other pages.  You will want to individually submit any deep pages (pages that have no links from the front page).

TIP #2: Submit your site to DMOZ.org

Submit your site to DMOZ.org.  Google uses the DMOZ directory to supplement its search results.  Click through the categories until you find one you believe your site matches.  Then hit the suggest URL link and submit your site.  This process can take a while because the categories are human monitored and your site will be reviewed prior to inclusion.

TIP #3: Submit your site to YAHOO!

Add your site to the Yahoo! Directory.  http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/dir/suggest/index.html

TIP #4: Submit your site to MSN

Add your site to MSN.com.  http://beta.search.msn.com/docs/submit.aspx

Mark ~ Good advice and links. There are a lot out there that have web sites that do not know how to submit their sites to search engines.

Don't get too excited about DMOZ. Their servers have been down for some months now and no ones knows when they will be back.

I was unaware that there was still a problem with DMOZ.  They posted a notice on December 18 that the editing server was back up.

Mark,

You're right the editing server is back up. The server for new volunteer editors is still down.

System failure and editing outage, October to December 2006

On October 20, 2006, the ODP's main server suffered a catastrophic system failure that prevented editors from working on the directory until December 18, 2006. During that period, an older build of the directory was visible to the public. On January 13, 2007, the Site Suggestion and Update Listings forms were again made available. On January 26, 2007, weekly publication of RDF dumps resumed.
