Hello Mr. Jackson, what are you doing here in Huelo Maui?
I was pleasantly surprised to meet this little fellow this morning, as he was crossing the road. We don't usually find Jackson's Chameleons in this part of Haiku, the Huelo area. We've brought some here in the past and let them go, but that was a really long time ago. This young male can't be very old and was probably born here.
They aren't native to Hawaii but they have adapted well in the upcountry area of Makawao which is not far away, but a higher elevation. They like high humidity and need cool temperatures at night.
When he's out in the open he's pretty easy to see, and that's how I spotted him. But just wait until he gets amongst some leaves and greenery, and if you blink you'll never see him again!
When these lizards stand still they are very, very hard to see. With their cute little feet and prehensile tail they can cling to just about anything, and they love to climb. They feed on insects and fruit and can catch flying bugs with their incredibly long tongue. Mr. Jackson here is only about 7 or 8 inches long with his tail, climbing in a hibiscus bush.
