Trash Talk 2013 - Clark County, WA Holiday Schedule

Trash Talk 2013It’s that time of year again when it's time to talk trash. From Thanksgiving through New Years Day, waste increases by more than 25% in most households. It’s mostly food, shopping bags, product packaging, and gift wrap.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the additional debris adds up to an extra 1 million ton of trash a week. Obviously, efforts to recycle some of our holiday trash is a good plan. Let’s all try to reduce, reuse, and recycle to benefit our community and the environment.

The folks who pick up the trash deserve some holiday time with their own families. Therefore, schedules are modified this time of year with that goal in mind. However, often the schedule is difficult to remember. We tend to be creatures of habit.

Hi Debb - Great timely reminder. It's during these heavy trash times that I'm glad our city has an effective recycling program - it makes it easier to deal with all of the packaging material we seem to be inundated with.

Love that title Debb. A little trash talk here and there makes us more aware of our environment and what we can do to make it better.

You are so smart to post this for consumers.  Funny coincidence as I was about to do the same thing.  And now, holiday gift wrap and greeting cards are recyclable! Just not the foil embossed kind.  Great post!

Hi Alexandra - thanks.

It would be nice to think that we could reduce our consumption of single-use containers during the holidays. Have you seen Bag It!?

Thanks for sharing and hopefully all will cut back some maybe. Here we have a huge recycling program and if the folks participate they get a credit on their bill.

Debb,

You are so correct as the trash becomes a big item this time of the year. We recycle but they only give us one bin which in our household is not enough. I think the trash pick up times here stay the same unless a scheduled pickup day falls on a holiday. Good reminder for folks to recycle, reuse and maybe reduce!

Hi Debb - I also love this post title.   Those are pretty incredible(and sad) numbers of the increase in trash.   As for me, cash is always the right size for a gift and I've never heard of anyone tossing it aside -- and if they should I may be taking to dumpster diving.
