When DNA is exposed to UV light, It's chemical bonding characteristics are altered so that cell reproduction no longer takes place - rendering the micro-organism harmless.

 dna enlargment

The ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum has a frequency just below visible light. Ultraviolet light is nature's way of controlling micro-organisms.Outdoors, germs are naturally regulated by ultraviolet light from the sun.wave length graf

Ultraviolet light equipment produces ultraviolet light at the specific wavelength of 254mn (nanometers). At this wavelength the UV light is most effective at inactivation. As an airborne micro-organism passes through your heating and /or air conditioning system, the UV light penetrates the organism's membrane and alters its genetic material (DNA). With altered DNA, the micro-organism will no longer be able to reproduce, making it effectively harmless. Further, without the ability to reproduce, and due to the short lifespan of most micro-organisms, the population of them in the air diminishes rapidly and dramatically.

Information provided by ultravation light equipment specifications.

FINAL NOTES:In the past few years,as the popularity of Ultra-Violet lights has increased, information about these lights has been as varied as the air conditioning service and salesman's pitch. Here are a few things every home owner should know before having one of these installed on your system. In the case of UV lights, size does matter. The better units are going to have longer bulbs and are going to come in pairs. I always advise my clients to spend as much as they can afford on any IAQ product. One of the most important things to remember that a UV light does not clean an evaporator coil, blower motor or the interior of a Air Handler. A Ultra-Violet light will keep them clean. In other words everything inside that air handler needs to be cleaned before the light is installed in the air handler. I recommend to my clients that they get a unit that has two bulbs, one is placed on the return side just below the coil. The second bulb is placed on the supply side just after the evaporator coil and before the blower motor. Many customers have asked me, "If I have a UV light do I need a filter." The answer is an absolute yes. Again I tell my clients Buy the best filter system you can afford. I will write another bog soon about these filters. To recap: Buy a dual bulb UV light, buy the best one you can afford, have it installed after your A/C system is cleaned, better yet when a new one is installed. Bulbs should be replaced ever year. The better units will have a ten year warranty on the power head.

I know the U.V. systems for well water seem to work really well.  I've sold several homes with the systems installed.  Although I don't have any issues with my well water, I have considered a U.V. system just as a precaution.

Really cool technology.

Hi Brian,

You are correct sir, UV light systems for water purification is available. They work very well. I am a EcoQuest dealer and we have a very good product that can be used on well water and city water systems. EcoQuest also has a system for the car. They have reduced evey thing to the size of a radar detctor. These same units are capapble to purify about 500 sqft. My wife has one in her car, and then carries it into her office. If you are needing more information there is a link on my website, www.mermininspections.com. Just click on EcoQuest logo.

Great information as usual!  Keeps the information pipeline flowing.  There are so many agents that need more information to educate themselves, so they can help their clients make the most informed decisions or at least give them options.  You are great at doing just that, informing the real estate community about their options.

i HAD A ULYRA VIOLET INSTALLED LAST WEEK. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT IS. I HAVE WRITTEN THE COMPANY FOR INFORMATION SO FAR NO RESPONCE. I DO KNOW I WAS RIPPED OFF AS THE CHARGE WAS 1,460.00 AND I BELIEVE IT IS JUST ONE BULB. AND TYEY DID NOT CLEAN THE HANDLER FIRST. THEY WERE TO COME BACK AND USE A ROATER ON THE DUTS BUT AFTER I CHECKEN ON THAT I FOUND PEOPLE SAID IT WAS NOT GOOD . SO I CALLED AND CANCLLED. HE GAVE ME A 59500 REFUND OFF THE 205500.  WHAT IS MY RECOURSE?

THE COMPANY IS COOL DUCTS A/C HEATING INC. 6603 INDUSTRAL AVE. PORT RICHY, FL. 1 866-526-3828.  AS ALL I HAVE IS THE AMOUNT OF 205500 ON A WORK SHEET AS I AM ONE OF THERE CUSTOMERS FOR AIR CONDITION CHECK UPS 2 TIMES A YEAR. THAT IS WHY I WAS TALKED INTO THE FILTER AS HE SAID I HAD MOLD. SINCE I HAVE ASTHEMA I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA. UNTIL I CHECKED THREE PLACES AND THE CHARGE IS 59500.

Dear Adeline Blumentritt,

I am so sorry that you have had this type of experiece with your Indoor Air Quality needs. As I am in the Ft.Myers, and Cape Coral area I am not familiar with that company. I feel even worse after reading that you have a contract with them for regular preventive maintanence. Like anyone else I am sure you just want honest information to make a very important decision on something that is to bennifit your health. Most people want to be comfortable dealing with a contractor and to recieve their monies worth of products and services. It is unfortunate that you have a company that tells you, that you have mold without doing any testing. My normal operating proceedure would be to recommend that testing be done to hear from my certified lab if it is mold, what kind it is, and how sesvere. When it comes to the air conditioning and duct system 99% of the time it is extremely manageable. After I get results from the lab I sit down with my client, to figure out what the remediation and preventive measures should be. I believe you need to deal with a I.A.Q professional that is seperate to the air conditioning company. In my case I am a seperate licensed company in Sw Florida that has affiliations with numerous air conditioning companies. There is no conflict of interest with any A/C company. I have one A/C link on my website only because I have worked with their customers for a very long time. I will give any A/C company a link on my website that shows me that they are a good and honest company. The moral of the story for the future is get a licensed IAQ professional. It my cost a few dollars but this professional will give you unbais information. I have found numerous air conditioning companies that have service technicians working on commissions to sell these types of products. Most applications make it possible to use a 2 bulb Ultra Violet light. It doesn't make any sense to use a single bulb. I don't know how big a company yours is and how large their overhead is but I feel a single bulb UV Light at that price is over priced. I can put in a dual bulb unit of top of the line quality for less than their single bulb price. Be advised that I am a small consulting firm with very little overhead. It is very important to ask people to see their credentials. Just because this person works for an A/C company doesn't me that they are knowledgable about air quality. I have trained many air conditioning technicians over the years and I stress to them not to automatically assume that what they see is mold. There are many ways to deal with IAQ concerns. The first step is investigate, then test, and then treat. And finally there is prevention. It sounds that you may have read some of my blogs. If not I would recommend reading them. Also go to my website at www.mermininspections.com. There is also a video on a very good duct cleaning machine. This is the only machine I feel will actually clean duct work. I will not recommend any air conditioning company unless they have this machine for duct cleaning. It is called Abatement Technologies. I feel you should stop and start over. I don't know what brand of UV light they installed, but I feel you were over charged for a single bulb unit. It also sounds like they were going to use a RotoBrush duct cleaning machine. I used to own a machine like that years ago. If I was to buy another machine today it would be the Abatement Technologies machine. I would recommend that you stop and start over. Find a nationally certified mold inspector like me for a consulation to give you good advice. If I can ever help you please don't hesitate to call me. My contact information and phone number are on my website.

Good luck and God Bless,

Jacob Mermin CHI/CMI
