Historic Sites in Hernando County, Florida - Chinsegut Hill Manor House
Chinsegut Hill Manor House in Brooksville, Florida is another one of the beautiful historic sites in Hernando County and truly a treasure of our area.
Listed on the National Historic Register in 2013, this historic structure is situated atop of a hill overlooking hundreds of acres of public and private lands.
The site was first settled in 1845, then sold in 1851 at which time the new owners began construction of the manor house. At that time, the property was called Mount Airy, then renamed Snow Hill in 1873 until 1905 when yet another new owner gave the site its present name, Chinsegut Hill.
In 1932, over 2000 acres of land were donated to the United States Department of Agriculture for research and conservation purposes. In 1974, the house itself was leased to the University of Florida (USF) which used it for educational purposes and as a conference center until recent years. In 2013, the lease with USF ended and since then, Hernando County is leasing the property from the State of Florida.

This beautiful home surely has seen many social and political changes throughout the years from the Civil War to our modern times. During its heyday, many famous people were guests at Chinsegut Manor House including Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, authors Helen Keller and Marjorie Kinnan Rowlings, among many others.
The Future of Chinsegut Hill
Today, Chinsegut Hill Manor is undergoing much needed restoration from the foundation up. The nonprofit "Friends of Chinsegut Hill " are instrumental in this effort as well as the operation of the house and grounds as an historic site.

Once the restorations are completed, Chinsegut Hill will once again be a magnet for people from all walks of life to enjoy the house, grounds, and natural surroundings.
