How to Get Set for Day One and How to Say Good-Bye

When it comes to the first day at a new school, getting off to a good start is an important step to how your child adjusts socially and academically. To help make the transition as easy as possible, make sure they are registered and enrolled before the first day begins. Also, have all academic and curriculum problems addressed and handled early. If possible, try to arrange a meeting with another schoolmate before the first day of school. Oftentimes, many schools offer orientation programs where kids can check out the classrooms, try out the playground, and meet other kids.

Before school begins, plan a shopping trip with your kids to buy new clothes, backpacks and supplies. Let them have a say with what they like. You may not be thrilled with their neon backpack, but having something they love can boost their comfort level on the first day of school.

If your child has special needs - come from gifted, special programs or magnet schools - start communications with the new school administration as early as possible. During your house-hunting excursions, visit the school and get to know the staff. Then check back on a consistent basis to monitor your child's progress and to see if they are adjusting well to their new classes.

Saying Good-Bye
When you drop off your child at school, try not to stay longer than you have to. Instead, tell them exactly what you are going to do - "I'm going to stay 5 minutes, and then I have go."

Come up with a good-bye routine - a hug and a kiss, a secret handshake, or a high five. It doesn't matter what it is, as long as it's your own. Never sneak out and leave without saying good-bye.

Finally, be brave and put on a big smile. Kids can sense when you are insecure and anxious which may cause them to be anxious themselves. No matter how long it takes for your child to adjust to their new school, let them know consistently how proud you are of them.
