Family Before Profit: Nordstrom, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Home Depot, Von Maur
While retailers are scurring to rake in profits a day early (Thanksgiving Day), Nordstrom, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Home Depot, Von Maur among others are keeping their doors shut so that their employees can celebrate and gives thanks with their families.
According to al.com, Von Maur's president says “Some things are sacred, including spending time with family and loved ones on Thanksgiving and other holidays," Jim von Maur, the company's president, said in a prepared statement. "We profitably run our business during the remaining 358 days of the year, so we don’t have to sacrifice tradition for the sake of sales."
According David E. Johnson, chief executive of Strategic Vision LLC, by opening on Thanksgiving Day, retailers only capture the sales that they would normally get on Black Friday. He says that there has not be any indication of increased sales by way of a pre-Black Friday shopping day.
By not opening their doors on Thanksgiving Day, stores like Von Maur, Nordstrom, TJ Maxx, etc. set themselves apart from their competitors.
As for me, my Christmas shopping is done and even if it wasn't, I doubt I'd play into the frenzy on Thanksgiving Day.
