I Wish My Son Had Turned Out Like You

One of the first gentlemen that I met when I lept into this field with both feet was Jacob.  He is in his 60's and owns a small property management company in Connecticut; he manages 3 condominium projects.  One of my Realtor-friends had a listing in one of Jacob's associations that wasn't FHA-approved so I got his number and called him.

After spending some time with him on the phone, Jacob agreed to meet with me at Starbucks.  As it turned out, Jacob was already in the process of collecting all of the documents for FHA-approval.  When he informed me of this, I offered to review everything at no charge to see if he would need anything else.

We spent at least an hour talking and going through documents.  I was very impressed with Jacob's ethics.  He related several stories about contractors bidding for work in his projects offering to do "free" work at his house if they were to win the bid.  One offered a new roof; another offered a new driveway.  Each instance was rejected by Jacob even though it was clear that he was not a wealthy man.

After reviewing his documents, I made a couple of recommendations which he said that he would do.  He asked how much I typically charge to do what he had done.  When I told him he exclaimed "really?!  For that kind of money, I wouldn't hesitate to have you do this.  It has taken me weeks to compile all of this stuff!"

About a month or so later, Jacob called me and told me that he sent the package to FHA and it was approved.  He expressed sincere gratitude for spending that hour with him and reviewing his submission package.

I was just pleased that he was able to get it through.  I placed him in my database for someone to call in the future before the approval expired with FHA.

Before I could make that phone call, I received an email from him asking me if I remembered him and wanted me to call him.  I called him right away.

He sounded very excited to hear from me.  He told me "after our meeting at Starbucks, I was so impressed by you that I went home and told my wife all about you and how you helped me."  He went on to say "I wish my son had turned out like you."

That was one of the most tremendous compliments that I have ever received.  Especially coming from man of such high caliber.

He said that if I were to ever be a polician that he would vote for me because I am the type of person that can be trusted.  I truly did not want the conversation to end!

Taking his advice, I am the newly-elected Chairman of the Board of Finance in Union, CT.  Union is the smallest town in CT based upon population.  It's not of tremendous political stature but I am excited...and it's a start!
