Yesterday, I logged on to Facebook and saw a post by a former employee that literally made my heart smile. Now, I know that sounds sissy, but I think you'll agree with how sweet it was. I asked her to write a blog about it for me.
** Two months ago, a family from my hometown discovered that their 3 year old had Leukemia. They immediately took off to Memphis to spend some time at St. Jude. The little girl was given a number and the family was given a room. She began undergoing treatment to try and fight off this nasty disease. Now, since I'm from a small town, of course a Facebook page was created to help support her and her family. Each day, the mother would post something about this little trooper... how things were going, how she was responding to treatment, etc. My hometown even created a t-shirt for people to buy. Chili's Bar and Grill helped by donating a portion of their sales in her name. It was so heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. Well, two days ago, someone posted on their Facebook with this statement:
She is in REMISSION! There was NO cancer found in the biopsy!!!! Without continued chemo, she would almost certainly relapse, so the next 3 years of treatment will be centered around preventing a relapse.
I cannot tell you how exciting this was to see. And yesterday, the family drove back HOME from Memphis. While they were packing and getting ready to head home, the community got together and planned a welcome home that I'm sure the family will never forget. When they drove in at 5 yesterday, our PD met them and escorted them with sirens and lights. Then, members of the community had signs and lined Main Street and waved as the family drove through. I'm so proud to be a small town girl, and from a town that supports everyone, even 3 year olds who are tough as nails. It melted my heart.**
So there you have it. Why my heart smiled yesterday. It goes to show that faith, prayer and support from family (whether blood or not) can get you through anything. And small town living isn't always that bad. Happy Friday.
