Have You Ever Seen a "No See Um" ....

Living in Florida, one quickly becomes aware of "No See Ums". Not that you can actually See them, but you FELL them. These little insects live in close proximity to water, salt ot fresh, and like to feed on other animals ..... you, me, and other mammals.

When you go to the beach, if there is NOT much of a breeze, you will likely discover these little guys. The same applys to parks or other recreational areas with water in the close proximity.

Fortunately, living close to the Gulf Coast of Florida, we usually have a light breeze all the time which keeps these little biters down. Actually, the windier the better because these little insects can not fly against the wind. So if you want to enjoy the beach, go on a day that has a moderate wind. If no wind, then hang out in the water. Generally these bugs do not hang out over the water, so you are safer there.

This is the main reason most houses & condos hae screened in porches. To keep the No see ums or mosquitos out.

To show you a picture of a "No See um" is fairly difficult because there are actually many small biting bugs that fall under this catagory depending on where you are.

Here are a couple:

You can usually use bug spray like "Off" or "Cutter" to keep these little guys away. or you can use a citronella candle to keep them away.

Now you can say you HAVE seen a "No See Um" !!

When I was little our favorite name for the "NO SEE-UMS was "Flying Teeth".  You couldn't see them coming, but you sure could feel them bite you.  Great post!

We had our share of NoSee-Ums attacks while in Marine Corps boot camp training at Paris Island, South Carolina (during the month of June and July). Drill Sargents made us stand at attention and we had to let them bite us without flinching or slapping or scratching, all to prove that we had discipline.  :)
