Septic Covers can be in Unusual Home Locations

In the Northeast, we have many RI real estate homes that have sewage disposal systems called: septics, OWTS or wastewater treatment systems.  They all have access to these systems, or should, through a cover system.  Depending upon when the septic system was installed the septic maintenance person needs to locate.  Some are readily accessible with a cover that is seen above ground and others are not.  Those are the challenging ones...finding those covers!

access to a septic system

Well this one on a home inspection the other day was definitely uniquely place.  Here it was under the wooden deck off the side of the house with a trap door in the deck to access it.  The home inspector had no problem with access, testing it or removing the cover.  So it was nicely hidden but with maintenance septic access in mind.

But it was a first for having a hatch in a deck!  So just remember do leave an easy access location for your septic system when you have it done.  Love the things we see as real estate agents everyday.

Ginny, WOW, that is an unusual location for a septic system!    We have leech fields for septic systems in rural areas only, so don't have to deal with this much, thankfully!

Ginny: Now that is an unusual, but easy to get to, access point for this septic system.  They are pretty common in some area I cover.

You've got us beat on this one Ginny. We had one a few months ago that was half way under the deck, but never completely.

I have seen septic covers in some of the crazies places. That's fine, unless these systems have to be repaired or replaces.

Good morning Ginny.  I too have found septic covers in some crazy places but I've never seen one under a deck.  That's a new one on me but next time I'm looking for one I'll remember look at the deck!  Thanks and make it a great day in all you do.

Ginny, that is definitely a first! These septic tanks can often be a challenge to find.

There should probably be something in writing disclosing the location. Ours is visible so there will never be an issue.

Ginny I would be interested to know if the Appraiser points this out in the appraisal, and if he/she does if it presents an issue with financing.

Ginny, Now that took a lot of creative thinking. That was very smart of the seller to make it easy to access yet not something you trip over.

Uggh, I have seen so many septic covers in so many places and non-places I should write abook on it!  I can not imagine why sellers just don't identify the location and make it easier for all...well that is what makes this job interesting!  thank you all!
