It was one of those lovely winter/spring days with just a light breeze and no need for a coat. The morning started off on a high note with a featured post by Brad Andersohn on Active Rain. Brad had written about my PowerPoint presentation the night before. Brad commented on my post about my upcoming presentation to the Women's Council of Realtors, then I commented on his comment, and before long we were on the phone brainstorming. His creative PowerPoint post was the result. Thank goodness I had already made my 50 handouts because I was having so much fun (and a bit of frustration) trying to open Brad's new technical creation. He worked out the glitches and I was able to see it just before leaving for the WCR meeting. What a boost that was!

But, I was soooo busy blogging about what I was going to say about blogging that I didn't take time to figure out what I was actually going to be saying about blogging when I got to the podium of the Suburban Club. It was a wonderful group of 50 to 60 in attendance at the WCR's first annual Affiliate's Fair. There were agents, of course, but also title companies, a home inspector, a GRI and ABR  instructor, a  stager, a book publisher, an auction company, lenders, men as well as women (don't be fooled by the that name - Women's Council of Realtors – no gender limits here!)

AnneMargaretLaurenWhen it was time for me to speak, I was the lucky one to have my friend and mentor of 18 years, Anne Hruby, introduce me. If you ever have the opportunity to speak, believe me, try to get a best friend or colleague to do the introduction. Anne was so flattering that a friend suggested my head wouldn't fit through the door unless I turned sideways!  (That's Anne on the left in the photo with me and Lauren Montillo)

During the networking time before lunch, no one I spoke with knew what a blog was. So my presentation started with asking how many knew what a blog was, and about a dozen hands went up. Then how many read blogs and maybe a handful went up. When I asked how many actually have a blog, I only saw three. That told me not to get too technical with this audience, so I focused on why a Realtor would have a blog, and what the benefits are.

I don't talk from a script, so I used the PowerPoint only for reference. To illustrate why blogging matters to a Realtor, I shared stories of some of my blogs including Why advertising is for the birds, my zip code 21209, my use of technology, and some of my listings including Dickeyville, Stevenson, Slade, Griffin Way, Stevenson Post, Strathmore Towers, (both of them!), Clarks Lane,  and Heather Ridge.

MRome SpeakingThere were plenty of questions, especially "So what do you get out of blogging?" That opened the door for me to list what the Active Rainers already know: Blogging gets buyers to call, gets sellers to call, gets the media to call for quotes, gets groups like WCR asking you to speak. It gets agents from all over the country to have a name and face to refer friends, clients and relatives. It helps others by letting people know about what they have to offer, such as a delightful tea room and the creative American Craft artists. It helps sell a difficult property, like the historic church which had been on the market for two years, with a blog-based contest. It gives buyers and sellers useful information like how to arrange an auction as we did with Lauren Montillo from TRAC  http://www.tracauctions.com/, a Realtor-friendly auction company.

We spent a lot of time talking about Active Rain, and the audience loved my answer to "How much does it cost?" Zero is a great price! Even figuring in your time to blog, it's a good deal. Anne Hruby pointed out that this is one of the very rare FREE ways to get your name out in front of the public.

At the end I invited people to give me their cards and I would send them an invitation to Active Rain. I collected 20 cards, sent 20 invitations, and a couple have already joined!

The day that started out on that high note thanks to Brad Andersohn, kept going at that same energizing level. And now I have blogged about figuring out what to say about blogging, and then what I did say about blogging and getting in on the Rain.

Margaret,

I was in attendance at this presentation.  I have to tell you that it was extremely helpful and enlightening.  Your one on one insight has motivated me to create my own blog here on Active Rain, which I plan to write for the first time this week.  STAY TUNED!

Good for you, Margaret. Sounds like it went very well and you had an audience who really NEEDED to hear what you had to see, and could learn something to boot. I have been teaching introductory classes at some of our local RE boards on blogging and it has been great fun.

Learning about blogging from the best

I was fortunate enough to attend the Women's Council of Realtors Luncheon on Thursday, March 13 in Baltimore. I am not a member, but was invited as a guest by Arlene Blaker from IMC Lending, who is a dear friend of one of my dearest friends. I wasn't sure I was going to attend until Arlene forwarded me a copy of the agenda which read:

1st Annual Affiliate's Fair
TOPIC: What's a Blog Anyway?
SPEAKER:
Margaret Rome

It was like it was meant to be because a few weeks earlier, I was sitting in my GRI (Graduate Realtor Institute) class and my instructor kept referencing a Realtor named Margaret Rome. Being new, I had never heard of Margaret Rome. Listening to the stories and situations my instructor exampled, all I kept thinking was how I would be able to achieve that level of success and respect in the Real Estate industry. Everyone wants to be successful, but success can mean different things to different people.

I was in the travel industry for many, many years and I feel like I did reach that level of success and respect with both my clients and other travel agents alike. I was at the top of my game when I left the travel business. My success came by always focusing on my clients wants and needs before anything else. I used to laugh because the travel agency would always run sales incentives to promote certain travel vendors. I was the number one producer in the office and I would always loose. WHY you ask? Because I did not sell what my company wanted me to sell - I sold what my customers wanted and needed. My incentive, my reward, was a happy and satisfied customer every time.

So when my GRI instructor kept talking about Margaret Rome, I felt a connection even though I had never met her. She was, I felt, who I was as a travel agent and who I wanted to become as a Professional Realtor. And now I was excited at the opportunity to meet this woman in person and I was not disappointed. She was a true professional, poised, well spoken, confident in her presentation and demeanor and I could only watch her with envy.

I had started a blog, so the topic was of interest to me as well. I started the blog without a lot of knowledge and had no responses. I was going to give up on it, until I listened to her presentation. She restored my faith in blogging. So I set up this new blog and got rid of the old. Figured I would give myself a fresh start. So thank you Margaret Rome because here I am blogging and enjoying every word. And after hearing you speak, it doesn't really matter if anyone reads them now, because as I write my blogs from now on, I will remember you, and that will keep me focused on my goals. I don't think the Real Estate Industry has alot of role models, but as a Rookie Realtor, you are mine. My success in the workplace has always been about earning the respect of my clients and colleagues alike. If in the next few years people know me and respect me as they respect you, regardless of the number of transactions I make, THEN AND ONLY THEN WILL I CONSIDER MYSELF A SUCCESSFUL PROFESSIONAL REALTOR.

Margaret- Congratulations on your wonderful presentation and on the super PowerPoint presentation that you handed out. I commented on Brad's post that it is just what I needed na must now get your permission to link it to Land of Enchantment group. It is a great teaching tool. How is my second favorite city? I understand that prices are going through the roof in the city. (My son and daughter-in-law live there.)

What an awesome day, post, and person you are Margaret.  I love the photo's that were posted at the WCR site.  I hope I'll get to make it out soon to finally meet you in person.  You really made my day and in turn, I wanted to make yours.  It looks to me that the 20 you invited was time well spent and your giving of knowledge and your time shall never go unrewarded.

I am proud to have friends like you here on AR, and even more proud to have been a small part of your successful day.  People may forget your name, and even what you've said, but they will NEVER forget how you made them feel!  Thanks Margaret! :-)

Dear Margaret,

As usual, you "wowwed" the WCR attendees last Thursday.  Although you said you had not planned exactly what to say, you are so knowledgable on whatever subject you are speaking, and so perceptive to your audience, that the right words are always on your lips.  Excellent presentation.

This morning you said something to me that you should "blog" on.  You said, "In this business, success doesn't come to you, you have to go to "SUCCESS".  You always share your business accumen with others so their "road to their personal success" is faster, easier, less costly, and less frustrating!"  (Of course, I know you don't need new ideas for your blogs--your mind works so much faster than you can "blog!")

Thank you for sharing your wit and wisdom with so many!

Admiring you as always,

Anne Hruby

Hi Margaret:  I am so glad for you that your blogging presentation at WCR went so well.  It reminds me of a quote from a movie... "If You Build It... They Will Come."  Now changed into... "If You Blog It... They Will Come !"  Congratulations !

Anne, You have always "wowed" in both with your knowledge, compassion, and willing to give your all. Your students, including me, are so fortunate to have you in this wonderful world of real estate.

Steve, It was a wonderful day and I am still in contact with people from the audience gettting them on to AR.

Karen ann, Now that sounds like a title for a new blog. Go for it!
