Aging in Place Becomes More Prominent

Aging in Place is becoming more important even as long term care costs continue to rise. While some retirees or future retirees consider, and insist, on moving, others want to stay where they are comfortable, in a place they have called home for many years.

It's becoming increasingly difficult though, especially with the cost of living rising daily, mortgage payments becoming higher and previous forms of retirement incomes depleting.

The AARP is in agreement, and has announced that aging in place will be a critical component of long term care in the future, at a hearing of the Commission on Long-Term Care.

Executive Vice President Nancy LeaMond said:

"The Commission has to vote on [...] the importance of expanding consumer choice of quality care options, increasing access to home and community-based services that would allow more people to stay in their homes and communities, and bolstering support for family caregivers."

The Commission is already working on a proposal to Congress that will establish plans for future Long-Term Care legislation, highlighing the important of home care.

The amount of older Americans that prefer to age in place is growingThe fact of the matter is, many retirees prefer the freedom of their own home as opposed to retirement homes or communities with established rules. The swift change in retirement habits have made aging in place options more necessary than ever before.

The connections you establish in your communities, after a lifetime of living there, are just as important as financial security during retirement. It's an important to feel accepted and comfortable where you have decided spend your retirement. New aging in place options can make staying in your current home a more attractive option for retirees now or in the future.

Presently, a reverse mortgage can help you age in place providing the financial security and reliability necessary to enjoy retirement. There are many options available to you in order to supplement your retirement, or begin to plan your retirement. Planning for retirement as soon as possible is becoming more important...this is your chance to make a reverse mortgage work for you.

Phil:

Nice post. Things could change but I have always liked to travel around. We love Austin but I don't believe I have made my last move just yet.

Alan, it all depends on what you want out of retirement and if you're comfortable with your home right now and have no other plans for the future. I've known people who have decided to buy an RV and travel for half the year and spend the other half in their home and others who have decided to stay in their home during their retirement because it's close to everything they know. Best of luck and thanks for stopping by!

Aging in place is great for some, Phil. Not everyone can stay where they are but I'm sure most would prefer it. Happy Thanksgiving.

Toni, that's very true. There are plenty of options when it becomes time to decide where to live during retirement...aging in place is just one of them. For some, it's the perfect choice, for others, they would like to explore other options. Thanks for your comment and Happy Thanksgiving!

Phil, Happy Thanksgiving and thank you for another informative post!  Aging in place is becoming more popular in my market for many reasons.  In order to do so with the least amount of trouble, adults should plan well ahead of time.  Thank you for explaining how a reverse mortgage can help them with their plan.

Joe, very true. It's a big decision that, for many, will determine how they save for retirement. Maybe their house is too big or they want to move in with their children, or closer to family. One thing's for sure, the earlier you've made your decision, the more sound your retirement plan will be.

Rebecca, you're very welcome and a Happy Thanksgiving to you as well! Aging in Place is becoming an increasingly sound decision, especially for seniors who enjoy where they live and wish to escape the hassle of moving to a new home or another state. Hope this information helps.

Roy, it's a very important decision for many seniors. I believe it's one they should make before anything so that they can adjust their plans accordingly during retirement. Best of luck with your retirement plans!

Kaye, you are very welcome. Many of us are comfortable just where we are, especially as we get older. I don't think there has ever been anyone that enjoys moving, it's always a hassle. For seniors hoping to stay put in the place that has seem them build their families and adult lives, more options for aging in place are a must.
