Thanksgiving Traditions - What are Yours?

closeup roast turkey by hin255 freedigitalphotos.net

The turkey is unthawing in the refrigerator and I'll be spending some time today getting the house ready for guests and preparing for tomorrow's Thanksgiving meal.

Except for the turkey, dressing and gravy, I don't particularly stick to the "traditional" way Thanksgiving dinner is cooked.  Unless someone brings it, you won't find green bean casserole on my table and I'm known to throw in a different dish for an unexpected twist.

Thinking about the many different ways and places we have spent Thanksgiving over the years, there is one thing that is reoccurring - apart from the turkey - and that is spending the day with others.

We were not always close enough to family to have a family Thanksgiving, but there were always friends to share our Thanksgiving with.  We are continuing this tradition by inviting friends, collegues, and others we know who don't have family nearby to spend Thanksgiving with us.

Everyone has their own Thanksgiving traditions, what are yours?

I think it is always important to include those that do not have family to go to during this holiday Silvia!

I curious to see these non-traditional dishes that you are having.  :)

Good Morning Silvia, my Thanksgiving table also has the non-traditional foods, there will be many Turkish and Russian side dishes, of course Turkey, dressing are the main dishes. For the first time, we won't be having Thanksgiving at my house but if we were, there will be leg of lamb as the "other meat".

Silvia, no green bean casserole here either, my friends wanted baked beans instead.    Turkey is on the menu, and really wanted to smoke it outside, which still may happen.   The weather should be near 50.

Silivia I love Turkey.  A fresh bird though. I have a special recipe for stuffing with chestnuts in it that my mom makes that is to die for, a lot of work, it has to be frsh, no canned chestnuts.

Have a great holiday.

Larry and Sheila, that sounds like a good plan!

Roger, that is a different ethnic "twist" on the Thanksgiving table.

Rob, none of that at my house!  lol

Tom, I agree with you.  I rarely make mashed potatoes anymore but roast them together with sweet potatoes.  Most of the time, there are German-style veggies including red cabbage, sauerkraut, and brussel sprouts as well as special Christmas sweets for desert.

Beth, it's definitely a time of the year when you prepare foods you don't normally cook!

Joan, love baked beans as well.  If we have green beans, they'll be steamed with a touch of butter and toasted almonds.

Noah, that sounds wonderful!

Silvia looks like we have a similar tradition.  My wife and I also do not have family close by so we invite others who do not have family near by as well and college kids from our Church who are not going home for Thanksgiving.

This year it will be a smaller crowed because most of them have decided to travel, but it will be a great time with those that are still coming over.

Mitch, great game plan!  Enjoy!

Richard and Beth, it's nice every once in a while not having to cook.  Happy Thanksgiving to you!

Alexandra and Ron, I could never understand the marshmallows in everything!  :-)  Apples and lemon stuffing sound great.  Now that you mention it, my mother used to put prunes into chickens.

Eric, thank you and same to you!

George, sometimes a small group is just as good.  Depending on who is there, we play cards sometimes.  Enjoy the day.

Rob, I imagine it must be a lot of fun to see family that you don't normally see.  Enjoy your family Thanksgiving!
