No Shopping on Thanksgiving!

No Shopping on Thanksgiving!   Yes, I am getting up on my soap box.  And now the media has coined it as "Brown Thursday".

No Shopping on ThanksgivingDon't get me wrong, I am all for capitalism, and I understand that the big retailers make their big money during the Holiday Season, but come on.......I don't see any reason that ANY store should be open on Thanksgiving Day.

Do the retailers really need those extra dollars?

Is this a greed factor?

Do those retailers expect their employees to work that day or all night long?

It's just WRONG!!

Thanksgiving Day is for giving THANKS, not shopping for MORE.

I've never been a Black Friday shopper, and have no problem with the Black Friday rush, or the weekend shoppers, and the Cyber Monday....but I see no reason for ANY store opening it's doors on Thanksgiving DAY.

So, I am taking notice of which stores are opening their doors on Thanksgiving Day.   I won't spend my hard earned money in a store that doesn't feel that Thanksgiving is a day to be CLOSED.  The only "brown" on my Thanksgiving Thursday will be gravy on the mashed potatoes.

What say you?

Happy Thanksgiving to You and Your Family

Christine: Thanksgiving is a day I set aside to spend time with loved ones and enjoy all that I have been blessed with.  Zero chance I will be doing any shopping tomorrow.

Chris, To me there's a bit of a logic breakdown in the theory that staying open more means more dollars.  Everyone's paychecks didn't get larger just because the stores are open some extra hours. There's only so many dollars to spend, so whether I spent them Thanksgiving Day or December 12th, when my dollars are empty, they're empty.  I think it's a rob Peter to pay Paul type event.  Bill

I will not and I also won't shop on Black Friday or Cyber Monday.  It has gotten all too commercial and I refuse to participate in that.  My gifts are either homemade or ca$h.  Not crap that is unnecessary.

Anita: Same for me too.  Family, Food, Thankfulness, and football.

Bill: A photo in our local paper this morning of people camping in tents in front of Best Buy...already.  Pitiful!

Renee: I agree with you.  Our family says if we can't eat it then no gifts !  It's always baking or jams.

I never shop on Thanksgiving anyways. It's time for Turkey, blogging and football....I feel sorry for the employees that are "forced" to work on this holiday.

And what about the stores that "Open at Midnight Thanksgiving Evening!!" Oh great, you gave me the day off, but now I have to be at work at Midnight and work a graveyard shift?

Sad, sad, sad.

More opinions than you want to hear about.

To a large number of folks, Thanksgiving is more about football, parades, and gluttony than giving thanks.  Why not add greed, or the more mild money saving opportunity, to the list?  I think it's fine to choose not to shop on Thanksgiving, and it's also fine to enjoy ones holiday in any way one chooses, including shopping.

It does bring to mind the possibility that having Thanksgiving store hours may not be a great business decision.  There is a matter of holiday premium paid to employees, as well as other overhead that comes with an extra day of operation.  Anyone with a retail brain ought to be able to figure out that starting the shopping season on the day before Thanksgiving will catch all the deal hunters and still allow the operational savings of a Thanksgiving closing.  Of all major retailers, KMart comes to mind as one with a long tradition of being open on Thanksgiving.  Perhaps the others are jealous of their success.  KMart may not be closed on Thanksgiving, but they sure know how to close stores :)

I think the shopping on Thanksgiving is fine.  In fact it has become a tradition for many families.  With that said I DO NOT and will never shop on Thanksgiving.  For me it's family, good food and football.
