Knock Knock. Who's There?

By
Real Estate Agent with n/a

Here is another situation I am wondering if any other agents out there have encountered. I have a sixteen year old daughter that has plenty of friends. Most of them know that I am in the real estate business and a few of them have informed their parents that “My friend’s dad is a real estate agent.” Which of course is a great thing for me, the more people that know the better, right? Well anyway, one morning I decide that I am going to do most of my work that day from my home office. I mainly had a bunch of phone calls to make, organize some files on my computer. Things that I didn’t have to go to the office to do. I began my morning as usual by following up on a few expireds, calling on my sphere, etc.

The day was going by very smoothly when about 11am my doorbell rang. I answered the door and didn’t recognize the person on the other end. He obviously knew who I was, because he stated “Just the person that I need to talk to.” I had a puzzled look on my face. He proceeded to say that he was looking for a house. At this point he noticed my puzzled look and explained who he was. He was one of my daughter’s friend’s father. I had met him once at the grocery store a few months before.

I was very happy that he came to me for his real estate needs, but to just show up at my home out of the blue like that was a little over the top I think. Being that I was working from home on this day I was hardly dressed appropriately to conduct any real estate business face to face.

I don’t believe people, even if we know them, should just show up at your house for business. I feel they should still phone ahead and make an appointment and meet me at the office if they want to conduct business.

I am interested in seeing how some other real estate professional feel about this.

Thanks for reading

Hi Frankie, Well first of all if I am working at home, I never open my door to anyone unless I am expecting them.. And personally I think it's impolite to knock on doors with out a phone call, but many people are not of the same mind set...

How did you handle it?
PS you might want to make this a members only posts!

This wouldn't bother me to much. There are reason for just stopping by and you have a client to work with.

I would not have a problem with someone showing up at my door looking to use my Real Estate expertise, since I spend the bulk of my time working from home. I would have invited the person in made some coffee and went about seeing how I could help them find their new home. I don't believe dress in this business, especially with a referral client, is that important. I know if I was in the same position I would feel somewhat offended having to set an appointment to meet in the office IMHO.

The interesting question is did the client show up to the following appointment.  I've often been guilty of putting myself last trying to meet the needs of clients.  We get it in our head that if we don't we will lose the deal.  But in the end, if we remember that we are professionals and that we want and will be treated as professionals---will we still close as many deals.  I hope so, but have to admit that due to my own willingness to be overly flexible, I may never know.
