Today was a day of revelations as much as thanksgiving for me. This year was not about a table overfilled with delectible goodies, prepared lovingly by relatives young and old. The venue was not a crowded, cacaphonous room, filled with frenetic activity, save for the adorable little boy who decided to play catch me if you can to an appreciative audience, once he'd had enough of sitting quietly at a table filled with adults. It was relaxing, underplayed and thought provoking, in that dimly lit room with black and white photo lined walls that spoke convincingly of another time.
The Butternut Squash soup at Hemingway's, delicious in its simpliciity and subtle flavorings had me wishing I could, unobtrusively lick the bowl when utensils became useless. It was followed by turkey with stuffing, mashed and sweet potatoes, carrots and green beans. Though given more than enough time to have a leisurely meal before taking our order for dessert, when it arrived, my decadent dessert, a concoction of creamy cheese cake, over a layer of chocolate, resting on a graham cracker crust and drowning in caramel, drizzled with nuts was more than my rapidly expanding waistline could handle. Try as I might to keep pace, like a soldier on a too long march, it was no use. Halfway through, I asked for a container and took the rest of it home. One of saner mind might have left it behind, but . . .
Our sitting was early enough to allow time for us to watch a movie when we got home. I popped "The Lake House" into the DVD player and enjoyed once again the fantasy of time travel, the drama of souls feeling out of place in the worlds they occupied, and the inevitability that they would wind up together, no matter what life had otherwise planned.
What I realized at the end of this day was, even though things may change and what has always been may not forever continue to be, it's okay to embrace the differences and move on, enjoying the new normal. And more importantly, I found out once again and not surprisingly, that I am a hopeless romantic, no matter the stage of my "advanced wisdom."
Hope you all had a wonderful turkey day in your world.
