Las Cruces N.M. Day Trips: Silver City
There's so much to do and see around the Las Cruces area. One of my favorite things to do is to take a day trip to one of the many fantastic and beautiful towns in the southern part of New Mexico. One such town is Silver City, New Mexico.
On a lazy Sunday afternoon we gathered up the in-laws visiting from Ohio and hit the road, heading west to Caballo Lake for a wonderful day trip to Silver City. At Caballo Lake we jumped onto Highway 152 and headed up the edge of the Gila Wilderness.
On your way to Silver City you almost have to stop at the quaint little town of Hillsboro, New Mexico. You could stop by the cafe and have breakfast, or lunch, depending on how early you got everyone out of bed that morning! On this day we choose to continue on to Silver City where we knew some good Mexican food was waiting.
Once you're in Silver City, find a place to park and start your journey downtown. It is said that there are 101 things to do in Silver City. Explore the many local businesses that include everything from gift shops, art galleries, restaurants, coffee houses and much more. On this day, my mother-in-law found ornaments for her Christmas tree and a few gifts to bring home to Ohio. And me? Well, I found my favorite coffee house in the world, Javalina located at the historic Palace Hotel, where I sipped on a delicious cappuccino right before the ride home.
On our way home we couldn't not stop at the mystical City of Rocks. This place is truly beyond description and if you do visit New Mexico, this place is a must see.
The magic of New Mexico is really only a day trip away. Silver City is one of many. Stay tuned for more fabulous Southern New Mexico day trips!
