A Tale Of Two Deck Stairs

By
Home Inspector with Jay Markanich Real Estate Inspections, LLC 3380-000723

It was the best of two deck stairs, it was the worst of two deck stairs, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity ... in short, the period was so far like the present period, that most of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

Wow, when Dicken fits, Dickens fits!

Well, about it being the best of two deck stairs.  There was nothing best, or Best Practice, about either!

Compare!

Above is deck number one.

And this is deck number two.  It is a different house, inspected a week later.

Notice the similarities?

Each of the stair stringers is merely nailed from underneath and is sinking.

As these stringers sink, the stairs are sinking!

These decks are remarkably similar, and very dangerous.

Sooner or later each of the stringers will simply give way under someone's weight and fall, taking that person with it.

My recommendation:  before you walk up or down deck stairs, check them out!  Make sure what you are looking at is strong and will support the weight of one or more people!  You don't want to be the last test of the longevity of that staircase!

How did the work pass inspection from the government code enforcement inspector when it was originally constructed?

Dont ya just love it when builders take the shortuct as they take advantage of people lack of knowledge on how things are constructed!?!?!?! makes me sick!

With my weight I could probably put them to the test, but I am not sure I want to do that.  Brackets would be the way to go if I am correct?

Thanks for a good lesson on stairs.  I often wonder about stairways, now I'll know to look underneath!

Jay - I had to chuckle at Kimo's comment. Back when we had building inspectors in this county, they would NOT have noticed such an oversight.

People need real home inspectors who will look at everything.

Dagny - that is the idea around here!  I come to AR to learn and I love to post when I find teaching opportunities.

Jeff - not only saving materials money, but constructing things in such a way that's dangerous and wrong!

Kathy - that is another serious problem - stairs are a big deal and attachment and support are the crux of most problems.

Jim - ain't it the truth.  On an annual basis I wonder how many decks I run into with stringers like these.

Patricia - every time that happens the deck codes change!

Travis - one company that makes such attachments, Simpson Strong Tie, has almost 6000 such products!

Paula - even the other way around those stringers would have been weak due to the way they were cut!

Ric - shoddy work is probably the most frequent comment taker on my reports!

Liane - I look over, under, sideways, down.  Didn't the Stones say something about that?

Kimo - it's likely no gubment inspector ever saw this.

David - that and a zillion other reasons!

Gene - along with properly cutting the stringers to they are strong in and of themselves.

Jan - that's where the support lies!

Marte - the county guys simply have too much to do to look at everything well.  And often permits are not pulled either.

And on two different houses within one week John! You would be surprised how frequently I see this.  These two houses (see comment #11) gave me the opportunity to make a point.

Jay, I think you're looking at these from the wrong angle.  They're a new design of 'floating stairs'. ;)

And seen from above, upside down, and kind of at an angle, they're perfect Rafi!

Oh, squint one eye too.

Just came back from a Realtor convention. A manager introduced me as a great home inspector to which the agent replied "does he keep one eye closed?".

Wow, Rafi, I don't even know what that means!  Is the one eye thing good or bad?

Closing one eye so I only see half as much, but if I closed both I'd bump into things.  He was mostly joking, but you know there's a basis.

Great photos. I used to make my living building stairs and I still enjoy the precision and skill it takes to do it right.

Thanks Wayne.  Done right stairs will serve for a long time.  Done wrong they quickly come apart.
