Just recently I have read that South Carolina has skunk laws. I had no idea.
I never really considered a skunk for a pet, but it seems that there are those who do. And I have nothing against anyone who does own a skunk, I just never thought of them as a pet. But it seems that skunk owners are very passionate about their animals. They have them up to date on all of their shots, and of course de-scented. From what I've read, they're pretty similar to domestic cats. The state of South Carolina doesn't really like the idea of owning skunks, so they have a r ecently adopted law against any new pet skunks. But if you already have one, you are allowed to keep it. You do have to go through a permit process, though. The state believes that these animals are high risk carriers of rabies, and should not be domesticated. I understand their point, but aren't ferrets just as high a risk? And they are legal pets. Actually, the South Carolina Legislature has this to say about ferrets: "FERRETS HAVE A PROPENSITY TO MAKE UNPROVOKED ATTACKS THAT CAUSE BODILY INJURY TO A HUMAN BEING". And they say it multiple times, but they don't say anything like that about skunks. Seems to me that they've banned the wrong animal. I already have my hands full with a son (almost a year old), five cats, two dogs, and a few fish, so I really don't want to add to my already full house. But I don't see any harm in owning a pet skunk as long as they have been de-scented and are up to date on their vaccines. Seems like the state has just spent our tax dollars on another useless legislation. |

It wouldn't be government unless there were un -necessary spending. I think they do stuff like this just to piss off people.
