Skunk Laws

Baby SkunkJust recently I have read that South Carolina has skunk laws.  I had no idea.

I never really considered a skunk for a pet, but it seems that there are those who do.  And I have nothing against anyone who does own a skunk, I just never thought of them as a pet.

But it seems that skunk owners are very passionate about their animals.  They have them up to date on all of their shots, and of course de-scented.  From what I've read, they're pretty similar to domestic cats.

The state of South Carolina doesn't really like the idea of owning skunks, so they have a rSkunkecently adopted law against any new pet skunks.  But if you already have one, you are allowed to keep it.  You do have to go through a permit process, though.

The state believes that these animals are high risk carriers of rabies, and should not be domesticated.  I understand their point, but aren't ferrets just as high a risk?  And they are legal pets.  Actually, the South Carolina Legislature has this to say about ferrets:

"FERRETS HAVE A PROPENSITY TO MAKE UNPROVOKED ATTACKS THAT CAUSE BODILY INJURY TO A HUMAN BEING".

And they say it multiple times, but they don't say anything like that about skunks.  Seems to me that they've banned the wrong animal.

I already have my hands full with a son (almost a year old), five cats, two dogs, and a few fish, so I really don't want to add to my already full house.  But I don't see any harm in owning a pet skunk as long as they have been de-scented and are up to date on their vaccines.  Seems like the state has just spent our tax dollars on another useless legislation.

It wouldn't be government unless there were un -necessary spending. I think they do stuff like this just to piss off people.

Hi Jim & Maria,

Imagine having a pet skunk....I can't see it! LOL! But then again, I have lizards...:)

Hi Jim and Maria:  Well, it has never occurred to me to have a skunk for a pet but I guess if some folks can have pigs, some folks will want skunks.  At least skunk owners get them de-scented.

The key to owning a skunk is to have them de-scented... Can you imagine owning a skunk without it being de-scented?  It would take one heck of a desensitized noze and a pretty darn patient wife to put up with the smell.

That little guy in the pictures looks a lot like my Yorkie.  I think I'll paint my little terrier to look like a skunk then take him to the capital building in Columbia to parade him around to protest the skunk laws.

Jim & Maria, I think ferrets are disgusting and I can't understand why in the world anyone would want a skunk as a pet.  I just don't understand the things folks want as pets.  Seems weird.

Jim and Maria, I have a simple solution to skunk ownership---don't outlaw ownership---outlaw "de-scenting", I suppose that would lead to some "dissenting" though:)

Jim and Maria:

I had a friend growing up that had a skunk for a pet. They had the glands removed that cause the smell. It was a pretty good pet.

Thanks for commenting on my blog.

Gary: I think you are very right on that one my friend.

Donna: I can see a similarity between skunks and pigs.  I'm good without either myself.

Jon: I bet you would be able to round up a whole lot of people to protest with you.

Brian: A friend of ours a few years ago used to have a ferret.  We watched the little guy for him for a few days, and he really was a good pet.  I'm just leery about them because they could bite at an time.

Alan: I can see why people like having a skunk for a pet -- they're a pretty mild mannered animal.

Well, it goes to show you can learn something new everyday.  Skunks seem a little to big to keep in a cage.  Can you domestic a skunk?

Tanya: You can domesticate a skunk.  They take care of themselves very much like cats do.  They're about the same size, too (at least compared to my cats).

I can't believe that I'm the first on to say "that stinks"!  We have lots of skunks in this area.  They're fun to see running/hopping around, but they sure stay with you when you accidentally run them over.

Jem: That phrase never even popped into my mind.  And it's so appropriate here!  I can't say that I've seen a skunk in the wild, but that doesn't mean that we don't have them.

Skunk for pet? Who would have thought. They are awfully cute....think I"ll stick with my golden retriever, but at times, he could us a de-scent of his own, lol

Jem-good one! (that stinks)

Elizabeth: They are pretty cute, at least in these pictures.  I'm sticking with all of mine, too.
