Opera San Jose Event a Winter Winner in Cupertino, Calif.
by Cupertino REALTOR® Michelle Carr Crowe
As many of you know, I blog about a lot of fun (and free or low-cost) cultural celebrations and events throughout Santa Clara County, from San Jose to Palo Alto.
On December 4, 2013, Opera San Jose shared a variety of selections from their past, present and future opera seasons over the past 30 years. Opera San Jose’s Artistic Administrator Jake Lake served as emcee.
Selections included arias and duets from The Magic Flute and Don Giovanni by Mozart, as well as Englebert Humperdink’s Hansel & Gretel.
Performers included mezzo soprano Lisa Chavez, tenor Marc Schreiner, bass Silas Elash and soprano Cecilia Lopez. Due to the nature of the event, performers were not in costume for each role. It was interesting to see Marc Schreiner change his body language to become the female witch, and mezzo soprano Lisa Chavez become Hansel, both from Hansel & Gretel.
This free cultural event was one of several special performances provided through the Santa Clara County Library system's Fall Performing Arts and Culture Series. The next event is the last one of the season, set for December 14, 2013.
Unlike most opera performances, several parents and grandparents brought children to experience this art form. This was truly a special opportunity to experience opera as part of the Christmas and Hanukkah holiday season.
Although enjoying a free opera performance has nothing to do with helping people buy and sell Silicon Valley homes in San Jose, Cupertino and Palo Alto, it was a unique and enjoyable experience.

The two remaining shows of the 2013-2014 season are Madama Butterfly and Don Giovanni. Opera San Jose proudly performs their regular repertoire at the historic California Theatre, located at 345 S. First Street between San Carlos and San Salvador in downtown San Jose, Calif.
