Why am I an entrepreneur? When I was young, I didn't have a clue what an entrepreneur was, but I had a fire burning inside. Sadly, in my early 20s, I didn't know what to do with it, but by the time I reached my late 20s I was a full blown entrepreneur and I've never looked back. Entrepreneurial work isn't for everyone, but for those of us who chose it, it's the best way for us to flourish.

Why am I an entrepreneur?

  • The first and foremost reason has never changed. I love the freedom. I grew up in a blue collar home where having a job with a major corporation or strong company was the pinnacle of success, and I had that. Unfortunately, it made me cringe every time I punched a clock. I realized during those five years, that I was a dead man walking every time I walked to the time-clock. I love the freedom of being an entrepreneur.
  • Without a doubt, I never liked anyone determining how much money I could make. I determine my income. When you take a job with an employer, the employer says, "I'll pay you this amount of money for the job," and you accept or decline. In 1999, as part of an MBA project, I had to create a resume and post it online. I had right at 100 companies ask to talk to me about coming to work for them. The salaries were amazing, and yet, they were set in stone and that caused me to waiver. I did a few in-depth interviews, but I declined all offers. Why? They set my income. I may have actually made less doing my own thing, but how much I made was determined by how much of myself I invested in the business.
  • I have never been one who liked to color inside the lines. I like to be creative. That's a good reason I shouldn't be a CPA. I want to experiment, try new things, be bold and daring. I don't always go along with conventional wisdom. Some things are not conventional. As an independent entrepreneur, I have the freedom to do things that don't need corporate approval. If they work, great! If they fail, it's back to the drawing board, but it's my decision.
  • My time is my time. I set my schedule. If I want to work eighty hours a week, I want the freedom to do that. If I want to work eight hours a week, I want the freedom to do that. When I'm involved in a project, I don't like to stop until I reach my own predetermined goals. No leaving when the whistle sounds. I want the the choice to determine my schedule.
  • I also like to determine who I work with.  I'm a hard charger. There are a lot of people who can't handle that level of intensity in co-workers. I love having people around me who are driven. Being an entrepreneur gives me the ability to hire people who I am compatible with, people who fit into the company model and people who are visionary.

The list could go on and on, but being an entrepreneur is the only way I would ever want to work. I haven't had a guaranteed salary for nearly 30 years, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
