I solved the problem by buying a real potted tree.  It stays fresh.

For the past 10 years we've contemplated getting a fresh tree. In the end though, we break out with the ole "fake" with the lights and all already attached!

We were going to get a real tree this year, but then decided to go with the fake one too. (Lights attached) of course...
