I live in metro Atlanta, home to the Atlanta Hawks NBA Basketball the Atlanta Braves MLB Baseball! the Atlanta Thrashers NHL and the Atlanta Falcons NFL In addition to these wonderful sports teams Atlanta also offers some wonderful theaters, beautiful public parks (many of which offer baseball and softball opportunities), Zoo Atlanta Panda cam the Georgia Aquarium and numerous Universities and Colleges (including many of the nation's top Historically Black Colleges and Universities). There are, of course, numerous other things to see and do in metro Atlanta.

Today I wanted to highlight a top notch community service charity that is headquartered about 2.75 hours drive south of the city of Atlanta in Americus, Georgia. The organization is Habitat For Humanity International Website!

Habitat For Humanity International was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller as an ecumenical Christian housing ministry after having spent three years doing similar work in Africa. You can read about the ensuing eight years in Millard Fuller's book Love In The Mortar Joints. In 1984, President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter took their first work trip with Habitat For Humanity International. Their involvement with this fantastic organization propelled the effectiveness of it. Today, Habitat For Humanity has local affiliates and volunteer opportunities worldwide. Click HERE to find out more about your local opportunities to give a hand up! This is a fantastic organization that not only enriches Georgia, but the lives of people around the globe.

Charity Navigator Website! has given Habitat for Humanity International three out of a possible four stars; Click HERE to see the breakdown of the ratings and how they are determined for this organization.

Rich, Habitat for Humanity is a wonderful group. Every summer my daughter's youth groups will volunteer at the local projects. Everyone can get involved, no matter what your skills are. Thanks for sharing the info.

Rich - Great information on a great charitable organization, one you know I believe has a great mission. I haven't made it to their Americus facility yet, but the ED at our local affiliate spoke very highly of the people and the tour when she went there for training. Thanks, for the mention and the link back!

Debbie - It is very encouraging to see younger people dedicating some of their time to public service.

Karen - I have been prompted by your post to highlight this great organization. I have not made the trek to Americus either but they do have great wonderful local programs that anyone (as Debbie stated, "no matter what your skills are") can participate in if they choose.

My son and I volunteer at the Food Bank, but I have been invited to go help out at a Habitat project in a city south of here. Your post reminded me of that fact, so I think I will go this week.

Hi Rich, I love Habitat as well!  What an excellent cause.  My family and I participated in the Texas Association of Realtors Hurricane Rita Rebuild last year alongside a group of college kids who chose to spend Spring Break volunteering.  It was an enriching family experience for us and I look forward to doing it again.

Frank - Habitat is such a good organization. I donate often to my local Atlanta Community Food Bank and pitcher John Smoltz and the Atlanta Braves have a relationship with the Publix Grocery Store chain and the Atlanta Community Food Bank.

Amanda - It is great to hear that you all participated as a family. The enrichment an individual and/or family gains from public service is priceless.

Hi Rich, we helped out on a few builds and had a blast. It's a great way to give back a little time to our communities.

Keith & Robin - I could not agree more. Public service and giving back (in whatever way best suits the individual) is it own reward! Thanks for reading and commenting!
