Moving With Your Pet ...
6 Ways To Make It Less Traumatizing!
Moving is stressful. I know. I've done it a bunch of times and I work with dozens of people every year who move. It is not only stressful for adults, animals feel the stress too. Perhaps even more acutely!
Here are 6 tips to help you prepare for your pet's move to your new home.
1. Pack your pet's food, bowls/dishes, blankets, toys, etc in a box marked UNPACK FIRST. If you can, move it yourself with your pet or before your pet so that he can find his own things and feel at home in the new house
2. If it's a big move, take your dog on shorter trips in the same vehicle and carrier you will use for the move
3. If your move involves a big trip, be sure to plan for frequent stops to give your dog some exercise and familiarity with new, unfamiliar places. And, of course to do her business too
4. Keep your dog or cat safe by using a carrier during travel
5. When you get to your new home, make a comfortable place for your pet right away
6. Be sure to bring the same food your pet is used to from your old home, which may or may not be readily available at your new location. Let her get used to the new home without trying a new menu
As hard as it may seem at first, we all get used to new surroundings if we are surrounded by those we love. Be extra attentive during these times - both you and your pet will reduce your stress level by sharing with each other.
Wishing you and your pet much happiness in your new home! :-)
