Is this neighborhood right for my family & I?

When buying a home we tend to concern ourselves with items such as price, square footage, and the number of bedrooms. These are important but the neighborhood demographics should be just as important. So, here are a few questions you should ask the neighbors, your Broker, and yourself.

1. What are some of the interests your potential neighbors have? By asking you can learn more about the people that reside in the community. It can reveal if most tend to mind their own business or are friendly with their neighbors. Knowing this can help you decide if it’s the right neighborhood for you.

2. How would you like the neighborhood to look and feel? Think about your household and what might be important. Is having a freeway close important? Is crime a big concern as you may have small children? Is pride of ownership apparent?

3. Are there things about the neighborhood that you’re missing because they aren’t obvious? This is where the expertise of your Broker comes in.  He/she will have had the chance to get to know your personality and perhaps advise you on the “hidden” things.

4. Do the homes typically have any common issues? An inspector would be the best individual to ask this question to but your Broker may have represented Buyer’s in the community. Perhaps your Broker can put you in contact with an inspector that can assist.
