Peace At The Bird Feeder

Birds In Delaware County PAHere in SE PA we are having our second snow fall in two days.  I filled up my few bird feeders prior to the storm and have been enjoying the comings and goings of many birds.  I live in an area where there are a lot of house sparrows.  House sparrows travel in groups, safety in numbers. I do not enjoy their visits for they are very aggressive amongst themselves and often towards other more docile birds.  What I find interesting though is that these house sparrows do calm down a bit when the snow is falling and if there is an older slower bird amongst them.

This photo of the feeder shows a junco on the left and a house sparrow on the right.

The gadget on the top helps to keep larger birds off the feeder, most of the time.

Enjoy the sparrows and be very careful if you have to go out and about.

Gloria, I like the gadget that protects the smaller birds. We had a bit of snow last night too.

Very cool Gloria, I'm sure they appreciate not having to burrow through snow for food!

I haven't put my feeders out this year. But I did throw some bread crumbs and apples outside in the yard. If the birds don't eat them, the deer will.

Too cold to fight, or the sparrow is alone and is waiting on his 'gang' to show up!

It was always the squirrels I had trouble with at the feeders.  We finally solved the problem with one of those cylinders on the pole that prevents them from climbing up.

Hi Gloria,

That is a great bird house and good shelter for the harsh cold. Hopefully many will see your picture and decide to help the birds out also. We do not have snow around here but they still need bird seed.
