In many conversations, I've both heard and said the phrase "Let's do lunch sometime..." When I stop to think about it, only rarely has this "gesture" become a reality. Then, I get to pondering just why that is? For the most part, people do eat lunch. I think that lunch-breaks are shorter, more flexible (in terms of when one goes to lunch) and less a formal affair today than in days gone by. Thus making a lunch meeting almost inapropriate for either doing business or squeezing in some minor amount of work while choking down a sandwich.
I know that when I'm busy and get "rolling," I sometimes do not even think about food...much less pause during a valuable workday to bother with eating. It's just so time consuming. Then again, I'd probably be in better shape if I didn't devour my lunch on the fly...
When My older brother came home from Vietnam for some home cooking, I remember he inhaled his food and my mother complained that he would make himself sick eating so fast...It seems he had learned that if he didn't eat quickly at chow time, there would be no chow...
I suppose that lunch meetings should be scheduled for just after the normal lunch hour to keep focus on work and allow others to finish their lunch while moving the business to get done.
I still think it would be great to just make an executive decision and take a long lunch... It's good to be the boss too!!
How do you manage your lunch?
