This blog has a great description of the past year of 2013 set in a music note. The highs and the lows and strong and the diminshed portions- all blending and moving together to make a memorable year.

What song title comes to mind when I reflect on my business in 2013? It had to be a song about change and strength.

Whether it's real estate or life in general, life is a constant state of movement. As Realtors, we sell movement. What better song to exemplify movement, change, strength than Mannheim Steamroller's Fresh Aire II, "Going to Another Place." It echoes the joy of our work, the struggles, the varying pace, the energy. In a moment, the pace feels like it slows and the notes drop lower, but then it soars into a crescendo and the notes roll and merge and rocket upwards.

For me the song is one of triumph. Especially drawn to it while I drive, it always pulls me up from wherever I've been and leaves me with a smile.

How parallel is that to this past year? To these past few years? We've all felt the tension, the discordant moments, weeks, months... the transactions that threatened to tear us completely apart. The strains of the business have caused many to drop their instruments, their tools, and walk away. Yet what has kept those of us who remain firmly fixed? What has made us stronger? Perhaps it's the combination of what we do as a whole and our own individual professionalism, combined with our love, our true love, for what we do. Listen to the strength of the music, how each note builds on the other, how each instrument blends and enhances the others. We are so very much like an orchestra, some shining brighter at certain moments, then another steps forward to lend their character, and the result is glorious.

There's an underlying theme that runs through the song, allowing all the pieces of it to build. It reminds me of how we have consistent patterns in our work, good habits, systems, things that help ensure our success. Planning our day the day before or calling old clients to say hello, whatever the habits of success are, they're vital to our ultimate success. Remember the things that have helped you succeed and keep doing them.

Despite the challenges, the low moments, 2013 underscored the importance of remaining focused on what's truly important. Stay in touch with past clients, keep your eye on what truly matters, find joy in the journey, and you will reap the benefits in 2014.
