Hello Folks,

Here are some interesting facts about Louisville, Kentucky which I thought I would share with everyone.

  1. In 1778 General George Rodgers Clark established the first settlement in the area now known as Louisville, Kentucky
  2. Louisville is names after King Louis XVI of France because his soldiers were assisting the American Colonist in their battle against the British in the Revolutionary War.
  3. Louisville became a busy and large city because it was located at the "Falls of the Ohio". The falls required all boats to stop in Louisville, unload their cargo, transport it across land to a new boat located below the falls in order to continue on it's journey south.
  4. The University of Louisville was formerly established in 1846. This is the Oldest City supported college in the United States.
  5. The Kentucky School for the Blind was established in 1839 and is still assisting blind people today at the same location.
  6. President Zachary Taylor, our 12th President, was from Louisville and his home still stands on Apache Road ...... which  is the same street I grew up on and was about three blocks from my home.
  7. Louisville had one of the largest Slave Trades in the United States. The phrase "Sold down the river" comes from slaves being brought to Louisville, sold, and then shipped down the river to their new destination.
  8. During the Civil War, Kentucky was considered a "Border State" and did not pick one side or the other to support. For this reason the Union Forces built a Union Training camp in Louisville to recruit and train its soldiers. No Civil War battkes were fought in Louisville, but a few were found around it.
  9. In 1864 Ulysses S. Grant and General Sherman met in Louisville at the Galt House hotel to discuss the Spring Campaign and their plans to take Atlanta.
  10. The first Kentucky Derby was held on May 17, 1875. The winner was Aristides.
  11. In 1883, the first ‘Louisville Slugger" was built by John "Bud" Hillerich. One of the owners of Hillerich & Bradsby.
  12. In 1893 the sisters, Patty & Mildred Hill, wrote the song "Good Morning to All" which later had it's lyrics changed and became "Happy Birthday to you". The most performed song in the United States.
  13. The oldest Steam Boat still in Operation today is the "Belle of Louisville" which originally came to Louisville in 1931.
  14. The Largest Automobile Plant in the world is located in Louisville, Kentucky. Ford Kentucky Truck Plant (aka KTP).
  15. United Parcel Service (UPS) has their MAIN hub located in Louisville and ships their International Flights out of Louisville. They are also Louisville's largest employer. This air HUB is the 8th busiest in the world.
  16. Louisville is home to the worlds largest Restaurant company - YUM Brands which owns Pizza Hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken, A& W, Taco Bell, Long John Silvers.
  17. Louisville was Home to the First Electric Trolley

  19. Kailins Restaurant in Louisville is known for being the founder of the "Cheeseburger"
  20. The "Hot Brown" which is a dish containing Turkey, Peas, Gravey and some other ingredients was founded in Louisville at the Brown Hotel.
  21. PaPa Johns Pizza originated in Louisville(actually across the river) and has it's corporate offices here. The Football stadium which the University of Louisville plays their football games in is call "Papa John Stadium".
  22. Louisville is also known for regularly holding the largest fireworks display every year in April called "Thunder Over Louisville". It officially starts off the "Derby" season leading up to the Kentucky Derby.
