I Need To Design For Mobile Devices Or Be Left Behind

When 189 million Facebook users are "mobile only" and 1-in-4 people cannot remember a time not having their phone with them it may be time to rethink my mobile strategy. In a recent radio interview Kelly McDonald commented on some surprising social media statistics that has encouraged me to rethink not only my social media strategy but also my mobile strategy.

After the show aired I picked up my iPhone - always at my side - and searched for a blog post I had recently written on ActiveRain. What I discovered was the mobile version was a mess on my iPhone where I had gone in and "made it pretty" changing font attributes and adding simple HTML coding (a basic two cell table). As seen in the images below, on the left is an ActiveRain blog post using this technique as seen on my PC using Chrome, and on the right is an another ActiveRain blog post using that same technique as seen on my iPhone using Google Search. All I can say is "not pretty".

Embbed HTML Table Looks Good On PC Using Chrome Embbed HTML Table Does Not Look Good On iPhone Using Safari

Then I browsed some other ActiveRain blogs while still on my phone to see how things were looking (maybe it was just my post and my tinkering that was getting me in trouble will pretty printing with fancy fonts and slick tables). I happened upon a blog where I wanted to leave a comment but was unable to because I could not get the draggable captcha to work. Every time I tried to drag the "man" into the "drop here" box (see below right) my screen moved around instead. There was simply no easy way to use the draggable captcha on my "finger ready" mobile device. This of course was truly annoying as I am sure it would be for other users. Draggable captcha works just fine on desktop and laptop computers without touch screens (see below left) but fails outright on touch screen interfaces on devices like iPhones, iPads, and other phones and tablets that are meant to move at the flick of a finger.

Draggable Captcha Works Using A PC And Chrome Draggable Captcha Does Not Work Using An iPhone And Safari

I thought a long time about what Ms. McDonald had to say about social media and mobile device trends. As real estate agent, like many agents that pursue emerging and evolving trends, I shifted along time ago from printing something in the newspaper to blogging about something online. My clients have moved from newspapers to tablets and I have too. After blogging about something I tweet about it. I hope a large number number of prospects, clients and customers see my tweets (all 140 characters of it) and follow the links to my posts. Once there, what device were they using to read content? They're using whatever device they have in their hand, from phones to tablets first, then laptops and desktop computers. If they can't read my content because it doesn't display correctly on the device I'm going to lose them.  If I lose their "eyeballs" that translate into lost business (since viewers/readers simply move on to other posts or websites that are optimized for the device their using). A "one size fits all" design may not work on all devices, so using minimal design elements (loose the fancy fonts, fancy layouts, pretty printing of any kind) and use platform insensitive plug-ins and add-ons; this appears to be crucial in evolving along with today mobile trends.

As I rethink my social media strategy it may also be time to rethink my mobile designs strategy. I should design my blog posts and websites around mobile devices like phones and tablets before I worry about how my posts and websites will look on laptop and desktop machines. If I'm not checking out my content on phone and tablets I should be. Because what I've found so far about my posts and websites is that I need to design for mobile devices or be left behind.

Stephen, It's something I've noticed even on the desktop versions:  how our posts look varies by browser, IE, Firefox, Chrome all provide slightly different outputs.  Multiply that by phone technologies, Droid vs. Apple and it gets even more complex.  Fortunately our posts seem to look and act fine on our Droid phones, but I generally don't try to leave a comment either, mostly in Read mode rather than Write when cruising AR on the phone.

Bill/Liz, thanks for the comments. I'm concerned about AR's use of draggable captcha since I couldn't get it to work on my mobile device. I guess I'm slowly becoming one of the 1-in-4 who don't leave home without their phone!!!

Carol, I think you might have missed the point. I was writing about blog posts here on AR. I'm wondering if AR has missed the boat. I am rethinking my strategy as a result, whether to continue to post here or not. If AR isn't mobile ready then AR is lagging behind. Hmm!!!

Looking at the next generation buyer--> my youngest daughter (14) has sprouted a new limb...her iPhone. She clutches it and stares at it non-stop. I chide her regularly, but she doesn't care. I wonder WHAT she could be doing - I mean, she never ever puts the damn thing DOWN!!

BTW.

Stephen, Mrs & I coming down to research and evaluate the area for a planned possible move in the next 10-20 years. I just can't take cold anymore! Coming down Spring/Early summer of the coming year and then we'll plan other trips as time goes forward in an attempt to narrow down the where's.

Maybe we can plan a hello session down the line.

In the meantime, if you have any suggestions for locale? Ideally, I'd like a nice highrise on/near ocean ($$$ concerns, tho) where we'd nest as snowbirds, returning to Maine for the 3 months that are liveable there!

Fulton, thanks for the feedback. I have lots of ideas about where to live in Florida especially when it comes to Sarasota.  Feel free to give me a call to discuss options anytime.  BTW, where are you considering in Maine.  I'm a Bowdoin graduates so I have lots of thoughts about Maine too.

Barbara, thanks for the comments.  It only take about 2/3 seconds too lose eyeballs. We have to be mobile ready.

Right about now you should be sending palm tree Christmas Cards and smiling every day about it.

Cheryl, Palm trees instead of Christmas trees. Nothing like seeing a Santa on water skis.  Crystal white beaches instead of snow covered fields. In all the years I've visited Florida at this most wonderful time of the year, and now living here I may never get used to Christmas in sunny warm Southern Florida (BTW, it's 72 here today)!!!

Stephan,

This is a great reminder that we all need to look at what we are putting online on a mobile device for compatability. Good stuff.

Adrian, thanks for the positive feedback. We should never assume that the consumer is using the same device we are when formatting the information we post online.  Sometimes we spend so much time making it look pretty only to find out that it isn't so pretty on another device.  This reminds me why some sights like google or huffpost are often so simple, clean, generic.

According to Nielsen’s 2013 “The Mobile Consumer: A Global Snapshot,” 75% of U.S. smartphone users read email on their device at least once a month. Your websites, blogs and email marketing messages must be designed in a way that is optimized for the mobile screen. It is imperative that mobile devices are considered when creating an email campaign. Read more: http://www.ipartnermedia.com/holiday-season-email-newsletters-check-list-twice/

Randy, I think the "read rate" of e-mail on smartphones has got to be much higher. I don't know about you but I check my email on my phone often more than once daily. It's one of the ways I stay connected with customers. If they send me an email and I can action it right there (where ever I am) I will do so. Sometimes it has to wait until I'm back in the office where I have access to actionable information for the customer.
