Field of Dreams -Build It And They Will Come

Tips to Build Your Business

I liken my career in real estate to the movie "Field of Dreams".  I got a call this afternoon from an agent in Florida and that conversation lead to this blog.  I am happy to share my successes and my failures with other agents.  I figure that there is more than enough business to go around and perhaps others can learn from my tears and my triumphs.

If you told me at 20 that Iwould be a fairly successful Realtor at 50 I would have  looked at you like you had 3 heads and told you that you were crazy.  But when I was 24 I took a part time job with a small property management company and fell in love with the industry and today here I am still loving real estate.

How did I get here?  Listening and learning everyday has been and still is the key.  I have always told people I have never hadan original idea in my life, everything I have learned I have learned from someone else, either by success or by failure.

Everyone has a story and if you give them a chance they will be happy to share it with you. Some people like Brian Buffini, Dirk Zeller, Hobbs and Herder get paid very well for sharing theirs with you.  Sometimes other Realtors will be happy to share theirs with you for the price of a cup of coffee or less.

Things I have learned:

Business cards are cheap and they don't do you any good in the box or in your pocket.  Challenge yourself to give away 10 cards everyday. Leave them everywhere you can - the server at the restaurant, the bulletin board at Panera Bread or the grocery store.

People will forget what you did but they will never forget how you made them feel.  Never discount the power of a hand written note.  Write 10 personal notes everyday.

Get involved.  Activerain, local investment real estate groups, local neighborhood associations etc can all be great sources of future business.  Be sure to activate your free profile on every real estate website possible.  Answer people's questions and give advice as much as possible.

Sometimes referrals come from the least likely sources.  Other agents can sometimes be a source of great referrals.

Build a strong referral network, being able to give someone the name of a good plumber, electrician, contractor, handyman, pool guy can be a great item of value and it's free for you.

Two fortune cookie messages "More will be revealed" and "Wise man closes mouth and opens ears" are some of the best advice I've received.

Never stop learning.  There's always something to learn from every situation and from every person.

Don't forget yourself or your family.  Don't work so hard on your business that you lose site of those around you.  Your life is like a wheel and every spoke needs to be strong in order to have a well balanced life and to prevent you from getting a flat!!
