King Krule - Young Guitarist/Old Sound

I saw a really good show the other night in NYC.  The crowd was younger, most in their 20’s and 30’s. The lead singer/song writer and guitarist of King Krule, is Archy Marshall, direct from London, England.  He is backed up by his bass player, drummer, and rhythm guitarist.

With a nod to a band like Robert Palmer, the whole group wore jackets and ties, so they stood out as a bit more polished than most.  Archy Marshall is all of 19 years old and he looks like a tall, lanky, red headed puppy.  But then he starts to play and wow! – he’s got the voice of a soulful lion.

His growling baritone reminds me of a mix of Chet Baker, Leonard Cohen, and Billy Bragg with their rock and blues influence.  He’s also a great story teller.

I liked him so much that I bought his debut album, “6 Feet Beneath the Moon,” at the show.  This is a great way to support bands that you like because when you buy their CD at a show the money goes directly to them, not to middle men.

The next night King Krule was featured on the Late Show with David Letterman playing his song “Easy Easy” on his white Telecaster guitar.  Click here to check out his performance.

Stay tuned to hear about Tegan & Sara, two swinging sisters from Canada who have already released seven albums.  I’ve followed them for many years and will finally get to see them soon at the Capitol Theatre.  I welcome any comments or recommendations for artists that I should go see. gary@leogrande.com or call 914.761-7878
