Am I Doomed to Failure as Part Time Real Estate Agent?

Can I Be a Part-time Real Estate Agent?

Am I Doomed to Failure as Part Time Real Estate Agent?  Part-Time AgentWell, the best answer is, 'It depends.'  It depends on you.  How motivated are you?  Are you willing to make a commitment to hard work?  Are you willing to flex your schedule to meet your clients needs?  Are you willing to work long hours at both jobs, your regular job and your real estate job?  Yes, it is just like having two full-time jobs.

SoldIn case you don't know Real Estate agents get paid when their listing sells or a buyer buys.   No, we don't get a regular paycheck every two weeks, but a Real Estate closing check is often bigger than a regular paycheck!!

Can I Succeed as Part Time Real Estate Agent?  Absolutely!  You can succeed if you are willing to work hard and do whatever needs to be done to assist your sellers and your buyers accomplish their goals.

That may mean showing houses on your lunch hour or meeting with clients before or after your regular eight-hour job.

Somedays you may leave your house at 6:30 am and not get home until 11:30 pm and the next day is just a repeat as is the next day and the next.

Regular meals, well, you may 'eating on the run' many days.

Thru the years I've recruited a number on part or limited time agents who sold between 1-2 million per year. I used to pair them up with a fulltimer for their first 12 months. Today the logical solution is to join a real estate team to create seamless representation/coverage.

Mary~ Great advice and it holds true for part time and full time. YOU are in the driver's seat and only you can decide if you will succeed or not.

Michael, being part of team is an effective way to handle part-time as you said in your comment.  Merry Christmas.

Yay, I agree with your blog. It bugs me when people look down on part-time agents.  You can be a part-time agent who provides FULL SERVICE to clients.  There are some full-time agents who provide partial service to their clients.  Regardless of a FT or PT agent, as long as you are motivated to meet your clients' needs, and get the job done, you are a successfull agent.

Mary, I compare this to being an employee and a student. Both can succeed! I know this is true for me. In another world worked overtime consistently in my full time position while simultaneously enrolled in an MBA program. I graduated and succeeded both in school and work.

Where there is drive and determination, I believe anything is possible!

Great advise. I get approached by dual agents often. The assumption is that selling real estate is an easy paycheck... as we all know, it isn't. You have to put in the work and it does not end once you sell that one house. One HAS to be committed. Thanks for sharing.

Rosie, I can't agree with you more.  There are so many FT-ers that only work this career as PT-er.

Valerie, oh yes, there are many who think our business is so easy.  Well, what an eye-opener one day in life of real estate agent would give them.

Mary, I started out for the first 8 months or so as part time and know several agents that only "dabble", but have been int he business for years.

Great post- but I always cringe when I am working on a deal with a part time agent- they are typically hard to reach, and not as well versed as a full time agent.  I do do my best to help them though.

Shanna, thank you for helping the other agent (a part-timer) to work through the transaction.  Getting in contact with them when needed is always a challenge, but the goal is to close the deal and get paid.

Fred, so true.  It depends on the motivation and dedication of the individual not whether they are full or part time.
