In 2014, I'll be watching a couple of new technologies that could bring about some big changes in the way our industry works.
I'm particularly interested in Google Glass, set for a still undisclosed but immanent public release, and iBeacon, which is already out there, but not yet comprehensively implemented.
Google Glass, of course, is a computer you wear like glasses, with an optical display, a smart phone-type interface and voice commands. iBeacon is a Low Energy Bluetooth system that allows small transmitters to send push notifications to iOS or Android devices, such as Google Glass, in their vicinity.
We have some basic awareness of these new gizmos, but we're just not quite sure how they're going to emerge, whether they'll catch on, and what differences they will make.
But when you think about pairing the two of these in an information-sharing environment, very powerful capabilities emerge, and the potential is enormous. As a minor example from our little part of the picture, a simple transmitter placed on a yard sign could send a video tour of the home, along with full information on the property, all appropriately formatted, to a curious wearer of Google Glass who happened by. But that's just one tiny tip of the iceberg - I think the efforts to implement something new will be widespread and far-reaching.
On the other hand, opportunities for invasion of privacy, obtrusive marketing, annoying information overload and pointless time wasting are also going to emerge. There's going to be a lot of noise and friction.
It's going to be a difficult challenge to walk the fine line between these two outcomes, but I think 2014 is going to give early adopters a chance to get out there and navigate the possibilities.
It feels like we're once again in a transitional period, present at the birth of what may be the next big thing. I'm planning to get out there and get knee-deep in it - I think it's going to be great fun.
Dick almost all the gadgets I grew up seeing in movies and TV is become an reality. It is amazing the foresight they had back then.
Dick, I had a favorite client who wore those glasses things the whole time we were looking at places. It was both cool and odd at the same time.
I have heard of Glass and been following it, I would love to try it on and see what it is like. It could definitely be a distraction though...
Dick, Google glass seems a fun toy, but I don't foresee it gaining large scale business use when we all have these pretty great phones and tablets that already do the same things.
I'm not sure how Google Glass works for those of us who actually wear glasses.
Dick, I agree that some exciting new things are shaping up and that it's going to be great fun. Will this be the year we figure out Google Glass? Let's see!
I read many places are going to make them illegal to wear while driving- as exciting as it would sounds to have the listing go to the glasses as people drive by- this is going to be very dangerous!
It will be interesting. The Google Glasses could be a big thing. Although I cannot help but think about the "Octograb" in the movie The Jerk.
Interesting post and comments, however, we'll just have to wait and see how these tools develop, won't we?
Just for 2014? I think it's already here. They are many things we can use, not use, investigate, etc & waste countless hours per day in pursuit of the next shiny object that will give us an edge. It's turned into a frantic search.
It's fun to watch these new shiny things come out, as we sit back and assess how they will or won't impact our business.... I still see agents successfully list and sell homes with no cell phones and no computers, except at the office! Mind boggling, but still being done!
I've seen some spots about the Goggle Glass, but nothing on the iBeacon. Going to read the link now - THANX!
Great insights Dick. You're spot on with the outcome It will be interesting to see how this integrates into our business. There may be those that delve into it, like you. The rest of us, including me, will watch and see and let everyone else figure out if it's a good piece to add to our business. Will watch for your future blogs!
Dick,
With the speed at which new technologies are being created, I'm sure we'll see a hundred new ideas emerge this year. I've taken a wait and see approach to their adoption and acceptance by the consumer.
Congratulations on your Inman feature and Happy New Year!
Congratulations on the Inman blog feature. You've planted some seeds for thought here.
The concept of the google glass instant photo viewing function is interesting.
Information overload - I don't FEEL old, but enough is enough. While I never want to go back to the days of the 2" thick MLS book that was outdated when it hit the streets, can we really function quicker, better, smarter by adding more to our smartphones, tablets, laptops, bluetooths, etc.? Congrats on your feature.
Congrats on the Inman feature. At the rate of technological advances, I'm sure that 2014 will be full of innovations and that google glass and ibeacon are just two of many.
